In fairness it is a dog of a time to put any show.

Also in this day and age people can watch programs at anytime they like with catch up players and recorders. Is there a source on how many people watched the show off RTE website or people who have recorded it to watch again later

What's a decent figure for that time slot, anyone know?

Hard to know, Donie. It probably gets a decent audience on recorded platforms and on the RTE Player on top of the 'live' viewers.

One thing in their favour is that it's a good audience for advertisers - young-ish people who have disposable income.

I'd love to see it at about 9pm on a non-football night. It might be easier for them to attract high profile guests at an earlier time, too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,713 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

Yeah, that'd be good. It's a shame they left newstalk because of the time slot, and...well...

Anyway, i believe the show would/will be successful, just hope it gets a long enough run to settle down. Can't really have "regular" sections for a four show series.

Personally i'd love a Friday night preview of the weekend. That'd be perfect after the LLS (less so for people who don't sit through that, mind you!).

I don't know about the rest of you but by 11pm I'm on the way to bed and there's no way I'd still be up at midnight to watch the show (except this week as I've audience tickets :-)) I usually sky plus it and watch it at the weekend.

I've gotten my housemates to watch it the first night and they enjoyed it but 11pm is too late to get the casual viewer.

    Those figures can be misleading.

I don't watch it when it airs, usually catch it later in the week when I have some spare time. Although I guess its a show that tries to cater to everyone, so it might not be interesting all the time. Like I'll see what the story i, and give it a watch. Some guests and topics I wouldn't be interested in. I've been avoiding the usual Irish sports stuff last 7 days cause no doubt it would be full of All Ireland stuff.

And if I'm honest I'm starting to come back to Off the Ball. Still gets top interviews and an enjoyable show, Paul McGrath interview last week was tops.

Same as the two posters above. I haven't watched one episode live but have watched them all.

The same could be said of the other shows that are in the top 20 this week, people will watch them at different times too. I'm very surprised by it, but there is no good way of spinning losing half your audience over the course of the first two shows. It must be hugely disappointing for them.

Then again, I'm not sure a show starting after 11pm should be expected to be in the top 20. Only one managed it last week and that came in at 20. The 4 week run and the post prime-time start isn't doing them any favours.

The problem with saying figures don't take into account people who watch it later is that neither do advertisers. 6 million people could watch the show over the course of the week, but unless RTE can sell advertising to that audience it doesn't really matter.

Six million is a bit of an exaggeration obviously, and RTE do have ads on the Player, but the Player ads are, as far as I can tell anyway, across every show so not hitting the specific SC audience.

    /takes off amateur analyst hat

Is there a show this week?

Ah yeah, it's on tomorrow again at 11pm. No details yet.

In the meantime, if anyone is on a TV ratings panel for TAM or Neilsen, could you tell them you watch Second Captains Live every week?

I wouldn't worry too much about the ratings. It'll be renewed if the bosses in RTE like it. Giving it a limited run is just to see if the show has legs.

Changes will have to be made if another series is to be commissioned. It's a little all over the place at the moment.

McDevitt said on the podcast they'll have Donal Og Cusack, Richie Sadlier (no way!), Alieen Reid (Ireland's top female triathlete), and Mark Rowan (Paralympian).

    Should be very interesting.

It's all done via a set-top box with a very naff name - peoplemeters.

They've got that World Cup 90 sticker/folder yoke on the table!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

There is a real lack of Football guests on this show, which doesn't help Ken Earley find a role.

I suppose a live show in the middle of the night in Dublin make it unlikely any UK based players or ex-players will travel over. It does beg the question - does this show really need to be live?

Good spot - I spent a fortune on that yoke back in the day. Brian Clough did the advert for it.

i think stuff from the storehouse is broadcast to a few places around the world.

can't see this keeping up if it's live. there's only so many stories richie sadlier has.

It's really poor tonight. Can't see it lasting. Ken Early needs to be involved far more.

What's the deal with the lack of soccer? This is show 3 and apart from the messing with the rte archives Ritchie is the only football guest they've had. Really, what is the thinking behind that? Considering one third of old OTB was just football (and it was all through the rest of the show).

Not that i don't like the other guests, i just don't get it.

poor ould Ken looked so awkward in the opening segment, looking at the floor pretty much

Its not even a shyness thing, its more like he just doesn't like the forced banter element that comes with TV

Its a good show, but it definately doesn't need to be live especially at this hour.

I'd personally watch a two hour version of this show on another channel as competition for the late late show however. Pity these lads didn't end up on tv3 with a 2 hour sports/chat show on a Friday night at 9.30pm. Would have been interesting to see the viewing figures across the board for that particular night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,009 ✭✭✭✭wnolan1992

I know it's GAA central because of the time of year, but really the balance is a bit off. Maybe if it were on for 30 weeks a year (or whatever an average run for a weekly show is) there'd be more variety, but as is it's a bit meh to have so much GAA.

Panel is poor tonight IMO. Hopefully it'll pick up after the break.

It would be funny if they demanded an earlier timeslot and then had to walk because they didn't get it. Again.

I had assumed the fact that it's live would allow them to discuss (or at least read out!) the results of the evening. Either that or some texts or tweets or somrthing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Enough of the GAA talk, lads.

Not really on topic, just though this was the photo of the All Ireland for me....

Pity the Taoiseach didn't show as much class on the day...........:(

I hope the lads get the go-ahead for lots more shows, we need more personalities (give Ken more work!) like the lads instead of the usual drones we get!!

There are a lot of things they could do better, but McDevitt is a great interviewer.

Tubridy would have made a balls of that.

As was said earlier - Mark Rohan is a legend.

Beats alot of the other RTE produced stuff hands down

    Missed that!

Anyway, it seems that Ken's role is getting smaller by the week. I wonder does he not really want to be on tv. You'd have to think the football correspondant would push to have more (or even some) football on the show.

Balance between the interviews/discussion & the messing was fairly spot on tonight.

Edit: one last thing...it is too f***in late!

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭Sunny Disposition

    It's a very good show.
Good to see a bit of divilment on RTE, they are a bit of craic. Only negative for me has been their hurling coverage, which has been almost non existent. Only one hurler on tonight, three days before an All Ireland and no analysis of game at all. Football final preview was decent enough, but hurling coverage tonight was almost non existent.

I was actually at the show tonight I thought it was really good. I now have 3 Second Captains TShirts :-)

Great to see our less appreciated elite athletes like Aileen Reid get a bit of limelight for a change. She came across really well I thought. Mark Rohan interview was class. Some man in fairness, don't think the public would have got a chance to hear his story without a show like this.

Here is my opinion for why the show has great potential, their best asset is Ken, and they are not even using him.

TV isn't the place for one of Ken's methodical rambling analogy filled interviews but they have to try find a niche for him. I am a sports fan in general and I usually think soccer gets too much coverage but if anything it's not really being covered at all on the TV show. Plenty on the podcasts though.

I really hope RTÉ stick with it. It has really good potential just needs a bit of tinkering

I believe that the lads and the team they have behind them on this one are smart enough and good enough to know that it needs work and improvement so I expect to see the show get better as it goes along.

These lads are here to stay and hopefully we'll see a lot more of them on our TV screens over the next few years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,403 ✭✭✭spiritcrusher

I don't think we're going to get the podcasts in TV form, which is probably what peopled expected and possibly wanted (me included). Definitely needs tinkering but I think there's a solid basis there for a good hour of sport talking and messing.
As pretty much everyone is saying they really need to find a way to get Ken going on the show, maybe something similar to what Charlie Brooker did/does on that Channel 4 news show and gets to have his own section for about 5/10 minutes and just talk/rant about what he wants to. That's probably a bit close to just doing his 'report on sport' on d'telly but I'm sure they could think up some way of making it more 'TV'. It's possible that he's just not that into doing the TV stuff but I'd say people that don't listen to the pod are wondering why he's even there. They need to experience the highly entertaining, contrary, analogy filled rambles he has!
Murph on the other hand is like a pig in sh*t in front of the cameras. Which is pretty funny to see cos I went to school with the guy.

As pretty much everyone is saying they really need to find a way to get Ken going on the show.

The overwhelming response since the first night on here and twitter has been - "good show, but needs more Ken". There's no way that they can't be aware of this, yet they have done nothing about it.

Was in the audience last night. Good atmosphere, probably helped by all the free drink before it. Lads are sound and there's a bit of banter with the audience.

My brother who was my plus 1 for the night and had never heard the radio show or seen the tv show before was wondering though what the 'curly headed one was there for"!

He was kind of lost. Keeping score for the quiz at the end and the Rohan interview was pretty much it. When they were recording the promo's before hand he didn't do or say anything.

It's a shame like cause he is very clever, witty etc

The free beer was a nice touch alright.

I also hope RTE keep it on, however I didn't really enjoy it as much as the others last night it still has the feel of a group of lads on a test run waiting to get the official go-ahead from RTE.
