    ever heard of Hickwa (or however you spell it)? They examine hospitals etc pretty closely

    Yes of course. All professionals require some version of CPD (Continuous Professional Development). It'll be up to the National Nursing and Midwifery Board as to what form it'll take here. Medics here already have something similar to what was described in the article.

    On what grounds would the unions object?

    It seems strange to require Garda vetting only at the beginning of an individual's employment, and not on an ongoing basis.

    I don't foresee any reasonable objection when an employee is dealing with vulnerable individuals.

    HIQA. Mainly private hospitals, although have started checking on the HSE hospitals this year. They are they to ensure that hosptals and other health service providers are adhering to polices, quidelines, standards, procedure, etc.

    They dont though keep checks on Nurses professional development which I think is what the OP is refering too.
