What will an Abbot win mean for us?

    So if Tony Abbot wins the election as expected will it make a real difference to the Irish in Australia? Heard someone say it's bad news for those on 457 but not sure what will change really

    Tony's WON.
    Problem with Tony is that you never quite know what his stance is on much because he's like a weather vane and changes his mind a lot.
    The Liberals are generally/traditionally good for big business like mining etc. and not so good for the average Joe.
    They would be more pro 457 because potentially pay foreigners less than an Australian and big business benefits.
    It will be interesting to see what the next 3 years bring and how the Liberals would cope in a recession because they have bugger all experience of it.

    The liberals are more inclined to increase the supply of 457s and make obtaining them easier, thats just my opinion. This is because of the links labour have to the unions who have been putting pressure on the labour government to "give young Australians a fair go".

    I think it'll be funny to see how things play out between Clive Palmer and Campbell Newman in Queensland. There seems to of been a issue between the two of them making the headlines a few months ago and leading Palmer to form his own political party. Hahaha ya got to love Aussie politicians!

    My predictions on it:
    • Future infrastructure for mining and CSG will rebound
    • CFMEU etc. will have their wings clipped in a big way, particularly in VIC and NSW where they have been overly boisterous
    • SME's will probably get some relief in restructuring of penalty rates and future EA's allowing them to cut some costs
    • The paid parental leave plan of Tony's will end up getting revised as its too expensive and unfair
    • NBN - Who knows. Hopefully they will see the sense in a decent fibre optic network
    • Mining tax - Who knows, it depends on what the expected reactions from the big players are going to be
    • Carbon tax - Gonzo
    • Gonski reform - Will probably get some hatchet work

    Other than that, expect the same childish nonsense, half truths and soundbites that have always been standard fare from Canberra.

    Don't trust any of them

    In general, the Liberals profess themselves to be happy with the 457 system as it stands, whereas the ALP were making noises about tightening it, presumably resulting in fewer 457s.

    As an Irish person (or any non-Australian) holding a 457 visa, if you're being rational and selfish you would like to see the system tightened, since scarcity must increase the value of the visa you already hold. If nothing else, your bargaining position with your employer is strengthened if, should you leave, he could not get a new 457 visa for your replacement.

    But as an Irish (or other) person seeking a 457 visa, or as a person sympathetic to that group or having their interests at heart, you would obviously not like to see the system tightened.
