Having speed issues but not near as bad. 200Mb package.

Router had to be reset 3 times which is not normal.

Ok, well it's good to log issues here so we know what's happening. Everything looking OK for the time of evening (wired straight to router).

How can they sell 240Mb when 200Mb is proving difficult at peak times...

Eh, yes it was. On my Microsoft Surface. Does not even have an ethernet port. Got a new AC band router.

Watch out for that UPC 'customer loyalty' discount, it apparently expires after 12mths without notice.

Just noticed my bill has gone from €27 to €40. Called them to query and they transferred me to customer loyalty, who hung up after I was holding for 5 mins.
Sky don't seem to be much cheaper - €30 rising to €40 after 6mths.

Any other players in this space locally? Anything over €30 is a lot just for broadband - it's a basic human right these days surely? #FirstWorldProblems :-)

Vodafone €35 a month for just broadband, no phone.

Be careful if you're a very heavy user though - "unlimited" with Vodafone means 300GB per month, use more and they charge you.

Rang to cancel today and got everything half price for 6 months.

    Happy with that. :)

7 or 8 UPC heads walking around Greystones town today. Looking at the footpaths as if they are going to dig them up or something.

fingers crossed, starting to feel a bit technologically deprived with no UPC and no eFibre.

Where exactly please, as wondering near my gaff. no analogue service for months

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

There are plenty of estates for UPC to cable up to digital standard. I count Redford, Rathdown Park, Applewood, Hillside, Bellevue, and Heathervue. If they're going to invest in upgrading the old cable system I would expect these estates to be the first estates to be upgraded.

I saw them walking from Fenton Fires down along to the Burnaby, 7 of them with clip boards and hi vis jackets. They seemed particularly interested in the footpaths outside Café Delle Stelle and Sam McCauley's

Anyone know if the 240mb fibre is available in Charlesland? Trying to decide on whether to go with Vodafone 100mb or UPC 240mb. Its for streaming TV so would prefer the higher speed and unlimited downloads from UPC but a quick read of the thread suggests UPC not all its cracked up to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87 ✭✭Aronaay

I've had both and have found that upc gives you the advertised speed but is unreliable and Vodafone struggle to give you the speed but is reliable. This was in wood

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,356 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

Vodafone have a 300GB per month limit, so not a great option if you are planning a lot of streaming.

Look at my speed test just above your last post. Taken from Charlesland Wood.

I wouldn't call it unreliable. Since the cable connection it has been mainly bullet proof with just a few speed issues during peak hours.

We were paying €60 for TV, 120Mb broadband and phone but that deal expired. I rang them about it, they offered me a new 12-month contract but only 6 months at that price, so instead I cut the TV out and will now be paying €45 per month for the broadband and the phone (12-month contract).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭HappyDaze007

    Many thanks for your reply.

Think I'll get on to them and have a winge, have been thinking of changing to sky, I know they have a lower speed but that doesn't bother me, so long as it's above 3mb as I'm thinking of getting o e of those android boxes for the spare room...

    Thanks again

We just got offered a 12 month deal. €25 a month for phone 120mb broadband and horizon!!! It's a 12 month contract so we can't go wrong with it. Just have to remember when the year is up or it will jump to €80! So far so good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 149 ✭✭HappyDaze007

Managed to stay on the same package for €35 for 6 months and €45 for the following 6 months...

As my old man used to say....

Letter arrived today saying UPC would be upgrading the local network in the village (ie Greystones) soon so the rest of us can get broadband & digital TV.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,708 ✭✭✭Charlie-Bravo

Was looking at some houses in Redford park this week - while walking down one of the roads you can see the old cable going from house to house, then at one point it just stops! Oops, someone cut it when they replaced their fascias!

Is there a website link you can post (or can you scan and attach image of the leaflet)?

Anyone else losing their recordings on the Horizon box? Went to watch a movie I had on the box and it's gone along with a load of other recordings?

I asked in "Talk to: UPC" and all they would say was "within the next 6 months"

the letter said they'd be working in 2 stages - firstly attaching new cable to the house then returning later to remove the old cable (the existing cable is strung along the front of the houses in my estate).

Their fibre drops from the railway line near the south beach, I assume they need to connect back to there.

Got a notice in mail this morning about UPC running fibre across house soon, in Redford.

No, I'm not - I'm definitely with UPC. Not sure why SpeedTest thinks I'm with Magnet. It's improved slightly in the meantime thankfully.

Nice result over wifi with new router:

What were you running your test on? Different results for different devices. I tested an iPhone 5 beside a new iPad and the phone managed about 30Mb while the new iPad showed over 100Mb.

Tried this a number of time and the same result.

So beware comparing apples and oranges!

Get as new a device as you can, tablet or laptop and try it then.

    Guys,

Has anyone experienced frequent modem restarts (loosing sync) my one does it at least 2-3 times a day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,936 ✭✭✭LEIN

My restarts are averaging once a fortnight. Wired stuff is fine, wifi needs the kick in the arse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 386 ✭✭JanneG

My router had to constantly be rebooted (1-2 times per day) due to dropping the WiFi, but then got the router replaced about 2 months ago.

Think I've had it restarted once in that time... and that was due to pulling the wrong power plug...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 847 ✭✭✭wicklowdub

I've had the same issue since last weekend, I've been onto support and had a factory reset & a channel change - neither of which has made any difference. Interesting that someone else is having the same experience. Its obviously not a problem with individual routers then.
