The trailer looks quite good. Strange match up though with De Niro and Stallone! Gotta love anything Alan Arkin is in also!

Actually, the last time Stallone and De Niro were in a movie together, Copland, was probably Stallone's best acted role in his entire carreer.

It's from the prestigious director of comedic masterpieces like Get Smart, Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and several Adam Sandler efforts.

Wise not to get too excited.

The Klumps is very funny in fairness.

Looks better than I expected. The tone seems light hearted, but semi-serious and I'm so thankful both actors aren't mugging for camera. De Nero is horrible when he does that. I look forward to it.

It's Raging Bull vs Rocky! That's got to be how they pitched this thing...

Should be entertaining enough. They seem to have the right tone to the film.

I managed to last 20 minutes with this monstrosity before throwing in the towel.

Grudge Match is one of those films that on paper looks like another dud. From the director of such prestigious fare as Nutty Professor II: The Klumps and Adam Sandler's The Longest Yard, and featuring two actors whose best years are well behind them poking fun at their most iconic roles, it really didn't look all that great.

Grudge Match tells the tried and tested story about two old guys looking for one last time in the spot light and features a plot that you could knock out over a weekend and the classic rock soundtrack that feels like some Hollywood prerequisite for this type of film. Yet against all odds, Grudge Match manages to be something a little bit special.

Stallone and De Niro may not be playing characters named Rocky and LaMotta, but considering that one is a working class Pennsylvanian with a trainer whose never without his cap or a put down and the other plays an over the hill loudmouth who now spends his time telling boxing stories in his bar, it's hard not to instantly see both characters as the geriatric versions of their most famous pugilistic roles. As such it's hard not to warm to both almost instantaneously and the light heated script which sees one character connect with the son he never knew and the other fall in love once again with his long lost help Grudge Match to be the kind of old fashioned, easy to digest comedic fun that they really don't make any more.

Cliched as hell, generic and obvious in all the usual ways the film manages to overcome these shortcomings to create a genuinely heartfelt and enjoyable film. The characters bring a sensitivity to their roles that's genuinely fun to watch and the story manages a number of poignant moments where our leads look back at their pasts. The script is far sharper than it has any right to be. The fight itself, Grudgement Day is treated as nothing more as a publicity stunt by all except the participants who see it as a chance to finally put to bed a 30 year old rivalry. That the fight is treated as a joke allows us to bond with the Razor and the Kid and it underpins the emotional journey that both find themselves on. Most surprisingly is the manner in which the script manages to do something a little fresh with the relationships.

When the Kid first meets his son B.J. they instantly connect and genuinely like one another, there's no slow build up to their relationship and as such it allows both actors to bounce off one another with some genuinely sweet and funny moments. The BJ discussion as they drive home with B.J.'s son is one of the most charming and fun cinematic moments of the year.

Grudge Match never really rises about the material but it's a far better film than it has any right to be. It's simply a simple story well told and will leave you with a smile on your face. It may not do anything strikingly original but sometimes there's nothing better than a film that sets out simply to entertain and that's something Grudge Match accomplishes. It knows that it's not high art and embraces every cliche in the book and is all the better for it.

I didn't think I would enjoy it, but I did. Solid entertainment and the chemistry is pretty decent, supporting cast is good as well. Not a work of art by any means but perfect for an afternoon or evening you just want to switch your brain off and relax.

    Butterscotch jelly beans :p

I watched this recently and have to admit it wasn't bad, Arkin was great mvp of the film for me, Kevin Hart was annoying as hell though and I felt he got too much screen time

Kim Basinger looks very well for her age
