No politics please, this is a golf forum, Rory and only Rory can decide what country he plays for and that decision is now made, no need to bring politics into it.
    Please stay on topic...thanks

The topic has very publicly made an announcement about who he will represent in the Olympic golf competition, if he decided he did not want to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup because he now lives in the US, would we not discuss that?

McIlroy and Lowry (presuming Lowry will play this time) would make a fantastic team, pity it's not fourballs and foresomes.

Hi, discussions about nationalities and what country players decide to represent is specifically covered in the Golf Forum rules as a banned discussion.

I wouldn't pick either of them after they refused to play last time

Since it’s inception at the Olympics, and particularly because some of the top pros ridiculed its importance, I’ve always thought it should be for the top amateurs rather than pros. If the winners are Irish, I’d play off the 4 provincial winners over the previous 3 years to get 2 qualifiers.

Shane choose not to play, did he ever make himself available? He never put himself in a position to refuse to play.

Like any sport in the Olympics it’s the athletes choice to try and qualify.

Many golfers didn’t bother as was evident by the field.

Japan will be a far bigger attraction to professional athletes in all sports than Brazil was, Shane is the perfect example with his main sponsor being based in the country.

Why would Japan be more attractive than Brazil for Olympian golfers? These guys jet to, and play all over the world. If the Olympics competition is important, it won’t matter where the venue is.

For the same reason they play in any event outside of the majors, financially.

A lot more exposure to be had in Japan over Brazil

Exposure? Why more Japan than Brazil? It’s the Olympics.

Golf got practically none at the last Olympics and is likely to get the same at the next. Olympics coverage skips from short coverage of one event to the next, they will not cover 8 hours of golf each day, unless the golf channel or sky cover the golf in its entirety, it’s a non event.

What financial benefit is there outside of the nominal fee they get for gold? It was around $40k apparently, which is pretty small change to a top golfer.

You know it has very little to do with the golf and more with the players sponsors and what they can get their players to do when in Japan?

Ok I wouldn’t pick either of them as they CHOSE not to play. Is that better?

No, it’s unbelievably petty. Shane made it clear once the players ahead of him in the rankings decided not to play.

I see no issue with him playing.

Lowry cited the zika virus for pulling out. Anyway hopefully both will head to Japan with a decent chance of a medal. Pity they don't change up the format.

Episode 255 of the "No Laying Up" podcast released on the 21st Oct. It's a 90 minute interview with Brad Faxon. There's plenty of Rory chat in it. Goes through how they ended up working together and the putting/chipping training he's doing with Rory etc. Faxon continuously refers back to Rory throughout the podcast, even when talking about his own career. Comes across as almost in awe of him at times. Very much a go with feel approach to putting rather than follow a process. Interesting listening to someone from inside Rory's circle.

What a final pairing, Louis and Rory, the silkiest tee shot in golf and then Rory's pureness, pure golf porn

It's going to a play-off in the WGC-HSBC Champions as both Rory and Xander Schauffele have finished on -19. Oosthuizen finished a couple of shots further back.

Advantage Rory after the drives on first playoff hole. He was a bit nervy over those last 3 holes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,354 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Some approach on the playoff hole. Should make birdie, pressure on Xandervto get up and down.

    Leaves a chance too

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,354 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

    Deserved victory anyway

Another great week and victory. What a last four months he has had. Unbelievable golf averaging 67 per round.

Needs to bring out this same level of game and better attitude from next April on and I’m sure he will pick up a major again next year.

Brave second shot into the playoff hole. Deserved it after that. Good start to the season.

    Brilliant finish by Rory.
He will be delighted with the way he finished.
Hit the best 2 shots of the day under pressure in the play-off.

Just looking at the OWGR, Rory has scored over 100 world ranking points more this season than the next highest scorer, Brooks Koepka. He's now just over 1 point behind Koepka in the world rankings and could be number 1 by year end if he finishes the Race to Dubai strongly.
