Watching some highlights from today. He was a bit crooked off the tee - even with 3 wood. Still a 67 and only one back but its a tight old course; probably not the ideal place to be trying out new equipment.

It's exactly the right environment to be trying new equipment, an wide open and forgiving course will give you little in the way of feedback.

Not if you also want to win the tournament but he's good enough to adjust.

Ok so you now agree, it is the ideal place to trial new gear.

I don't think he'll look back at the end of his career and marvel at his South African Open trophy/trophies. Its a great environment to test out clubs he is practicing with in a competitive environment. Hopefully he will settle on these and build up to the Masters with them.

Rory to play the BMW PGA in May...

    http://www.europeantour.com/europeantour/season=2017/tournamentid=2017042/news/newsid=318233.html

The Memorial in Muirfield is the following week, he may play there and take the following weekend off before the US Open in Erin Hills

Tentaive schedule if I'd to make a guess...

Jan 19 – Abu Dhabi (ET)
Feb 2 - Dubai Desert (ET)
    Feb 23 - Honda Classic
    Mar 2 – WGC Mexico
Mar 16 - Arnold Palmer (PGA)
Mar 22 – WGC Match Play
    Apr 6 – Masters
May 4 – Wells Fargo (PGA)
    May 11 – Players (PGA)
May 25 – BMW PGA (ET)
    June 15 – US Open
July 6 – Irish Open (ET)
Jul 13 – Scottish Open (ET)
    Jul 20 – Open Championship
    Aug 3 – WGC Bridgestone
    Aug 10 – US PGA
    Aug 24 – Northern Trust (PGA)(FedEx)
    Sep 1 – Dell Championship (PGA)(FedEx)
    Sep 14 – BMW Championship (PGA)(FedEx)
    Sep 21 – Tour Championship (PGA)(FedEx)
    OCT 26 - WGC HSBC
Nov 2 – Turkish Airlines (ET)
Nov 16 – DP Tour Championship (ET)

He may add another tournament in April, not many appealing tournaments on either tour that month (RBC Heritage, Valero Texas, Zurich Classic on PGA and Trophee Hassan, Shenzhen International, Volvo China on ET). He may skip the Scottish Open and first FedEx tournament. The French Open, part of the Rolex Series is the week before the Irish Open, he is unlikely to play both the French and Scottish Open as it would mean 4 weeks in a row finishing with the Open, he may skip both altogether. The Italian Open (Oct 12) which is part of the Rolex sits in between a 4 week break of the Tour Championship and WGC HSBC, may see him head there.

Depends on why he is there. If its to test gear - its a test.

If he is there to win, its not the ideal course to be trying new gear.

But we know that he is really there to repay Els.

Not starting too brightly. Parred the first and bogied the par 5 second. A hole he birdied yesterday.

Agreed it does depend, it depends on how much kudos you put on the marketing hype surrounding different manufacturers.

Also Rory is way past the stage of just teeing it up and see what happens, you can be sure he is there to win.

Still not sure why you think this course or any course for that matter isn't ideal, that statement makes no sense to me, and implies that the equipment is sub standard or needs some kind of bedding in period, do you think he hasn't had it built to his specs and that he hasn't tested the equipment extensively on a launch monitor? or do you think he just waltzed in to the local Halpenny golf and picked it straight off the shelf and is trying it out for a round or two and to see what happens?.

No, as I have consistently advocated club fitting in various threads, you can rest assured that I don't think he went to the bargain rail in Halpenny.

My comments about the course were based on the number of times I saw him hitting from the trees.

Still doing it apparently as he's Gabriel Muscular Suspect the fourth. Parred the next two, but not an ideal start at all.

Now he's eagled the 8th and birdied the 9th. One under for the day so far. That's better :)

He's now 3 under for his round on the 13th after being 2 over!

He hit a five wood off the tee on the 9th to 323 yards.

Another birdie on the 13th. That's six under for his last six holes.

Another birdie -7 for last 7 holes

    Putting very, very well

He landed his drive on the 11th to within kicking distance of the green. But wasn't able to convert it.

But the putting has been immaculate.

    Seven straight one putts.

Would love to see stats for his driving this week. He looks to be seriously getting the ball out there!

It's probably exaggerated by the altitude, but he had one drive to 386 yards. It's kind of irrelevant exactly how far he's hitting it when it gets to that distance off the tee.

The par 3s are probably more of a test :)

Driving it better today but wedges miles out for distance.

Haven't been watching, but some of his shots looked very close in the clips the ET were tweeting.

15 yards too long over back of par 3 17th. Bogey. Was only about 20yds short of the green off the tee on an earlier par 4 and had to hole 12 footer for par after wedging it over the green.
