Windows Updating Problem

Recently when I went to shut down the computer, I saw the small shield icon beside the on/off icon. This tells me that updates are ready to be installed and my computer will be shut down. Normally when I go through this process all is OK and the "shield" icon has disappeared when I restart the computer.

Yesterday, I saw the shield icon and went through the process. When I restarted the computer, it was still there. I went to "check for updates" and it showed that two updates were ready to be installed. I decided to do it manually. It said "updates successful". Yet when I restarted, the shield icon was there. When I checked "recent updates" it showed the two updates were successful. However, when I go to "check for updates" it shows these two are ready for installation.

Can anyone shed some light as to waht is happening here ? as I am not very well up on these kind of issues. I have Windows Vista.

    Thanks.
