    hi,
i am trying to start up a business online. i am looking for some advice on how to register for a vat number and some of the suppliers that i have contacted are asking me for a proof of business/business number. i am employed full time and i just have a good idea to make some extra cash (small amount). where would this leave me with tax. all advice and tips would be gratefull to point me in the right direction.

    Hi,

You’ve a few options / ways you can move forward.

Firstly before you sign up for VAT or consider setting up a company you have to bear in mind the level of paper work and regulations you will have to comply with. Therefore if you are going to operate on a very small basis you could avoid this by simply trading without being registered for VAT etc. You would however have to declare any additional income for tax purposes.

If you really want to get VAT registered you apply to the revenue commissioners http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/vat/registration/

You can also register for a trading name directly with the CRO http://www.cro.ie/

I hope this gets you started in the right direction.
