Hey guys, Ill keep this short :)

Basically iam considering private surgery to have a mole removed from my neck! I hold a medical card but given that this surgery is for aesthetic reasons , i would have to pay the cost (which is fine as luckily i have a small few quid away)

However when i recently mentioned this to my gp, he said "I can refer you if you want me to"

What does this actually mean? I would still have to pay the cost plus consultation fee right? and iam no hurry to have it done so i dont need a referal to speed things up or anything!!

Just curious as to why he offered to refer me and stupidly never asked him why i may want a referal!!

Thoughts? useless with this sorta thing!!

He'll just send you to a consultant who would specialise in that sort of procedure.

Just saves you looking around for one yourself, and yes you will have to pay for the consultant appointment.

Doc refers you to WRH.... your a public patient... you wont have to pay consultant fee you may have to pay the €75 fee for day case though when you get the procedure

different story if you choose to go private

I would have thought that the referal will get you seen faster than you contacting the cons yourself. I know certain cons won't see you privately without referal. I don't think it will affect the cost.

    Feckin scam...

Imagine going into an accountant and saying "i need my accounts done".

"oh okay so, ring Mr. Accountant and he will do them"

"meanwhile here is my invoice for meeting you and doing nothing"

Then again they need the money.

a referal get you seen faster if your going private.... but you cant opt to go private to get seen by the consultant then change to go public for the procedure

if time is not a problem go public. it'l only cost you the €75

OP has a medical card, so isn't paying for the gp or the referal!

I was referred to a consultant in WRH last year and had to pay him €120 per visit. So I think the referral was to speed up the appointment. Didn't make any difference to the cost that I could tell.

A referral is just when the GP sends a letter to the consultant, the Secretary will book you in for an appointment.

If you go public you obviously will wait longer than going private and will pay more going private.
