I like Iseult for a girl, Diorraing (Durr-ing) and Brucháin (Bruck-awn) for a boy.

I have names picked out for potential children, but I want to keep those to myself for the moment. As you can probably guess from the above, they're ancient Irish names.

Hey, our imaginary kids make up a tragedy :D

Eoin, Micheál or Conor for a lad.

Amy, Roisin or Aoife for a girl.

Simple names, have no time for that alternative craic :P

Aoife - All Aoifes I have ever met are really nice to deal with.

Moira - It happened that the random drug test in my work was done by somebody named Moira.

I was bringing the lads down to her for two days. I think I had a mini crush on her.

Sebastian - Just happened to know few succesful people with that name.

That's why I decided to name my son Sebastian.

It was easy to get my wife to buy in because she liked/likes the movie "Cruel Intentions"

    Esme and Carys for girls.

Haven't thought about a boy cos I only want two and like the above names.

Surely you can understand people thinking "Wtf?" in relation to Ashok, and especially Yayoi?

Non unusual. You have to bear in mind the child's feelings, their peers and so on, rather than giving them a really different name just because you like the idea of it.

Seeing as how my wife is Japanese I don't see any problems arising. Unless some people are so incredibly narrow minded, in which the case the problem lies with them.

Eagerly returning to the thread every ten mins to see if my name has been mentioned.

    Disappointed every time. :(

I have always thought that The Backwards Man is a great name for either a boy or a girl. ;)

Hannah and Mona I really like for girls.

Conor, Liam and Donnacha for boys.

All nice names. I do like Hannah a lot. A Jewish name, incidentally. But you won't see anyone saying that you have to bear in mind the child's feelings, their peers and so on. Odd, that. :D

Well, in that case, I apologise for questioning you earlier old hippy. :o

Makes sense that if your partner is Japanese you'd choose a name from there.

No worries. Tbh, I like Irish names every much as Japanese or any other culture/nation. There shouldn't be boundaries when it comes to names, that's what I believe in.

Ah the auld made up Irish name. Be sure to stick it in front of a double-barrel for added ridiculous effect.

All are very assuredly real - I was almost christened Brucháin. Ever consider the possibility that some of us on boards are Gaeilgeoirs or have studied the language? Just because you haven't heard something before doesn't mean it's made up. Pretty ignorant comment.

That's a bit harsh. Besides, this is the 'like names' thread. The 'hate names' thread is over the road.

I have never met a Shauna that wasn't sexy as fook. A Rachel/Rachael either.

There are a few trailer parks that you are overlooking ......like all of them.

Worked with a pregnant girl in the US a few years ago who was planning on calling her baby Lake. Thought it was kind of cool. But for me will stick to Irish names like Dara, Conor, Ciara or Aoife for my kids.

Bianca is a character in Eastenders and was married to Ricky. And she used to roar at him so 'Bianca' became synonymous with 'Rickaaaaay'!

Nobody said my name yet :( Although it's been pretty popular for babies recently.

I am not married to any person. I do have one friend from India. But I have several from Pakistan and Sri Lanka. And many, many other countries besides.

But I'm not nearly pretentious enough to dream up a thread as a vehicle to wave my internationalism around.

Incidentally, one of the best heads I've shared a yarn with was Sri Lankan, by the name of Trevor. Boring name, great guy.

    Sneer sneer.

    Sneer sneer.

The thread was set up to counter the negative thread on what names people hate. I chose two names that I like and are relevant to my world. Has absolutely nothing to do with being pretentious or waving my internationalism around. Whatever that might entail.

If you want the negative, hateful thread - I'm sure you know where it is. This one's about names you like, nothing more, nothing less.

And you go on about someone sneering! And you know it's not odd, because Hannah is not an unusual name. No need for the disingenuousness.

Ok this forum can be read and posted to by anyone around the world, but the vast majority of people posting to it are Irish, so I'm thinking in terms of kids in Ireland. And kids aren't mature enough to be receptive to the exotic all the time. Yes it should be taken into consideration that a person might find their name a burden. And it's selfish of parents not to think about this. I'd expect a kid called Aoife in Japan to have a difficult time having to spell her name/explain how it's pronounced all the time. "It's other people's problem" would really be of no use to her.

Well forcing your beliefs on others... kinda cancels out your tolerance message. There's no point in pretending there are no cultural boundaries and pretending not to understand what people are saying when they're not familiar with something very exotic. Much as the idea of no cultural boundaries is lovely, it isn't the reality.

That is true actually. Jack used to be such an old man's name. That's not the case now. I think its a bit too popular now though.
