    Hello

Parents got their chimney fixed 3 years ago under insurance.

Now 3 years later an insurance assessor came out and says it has to be re done and that the lad who done it originally has done some dodgy work .......and he was recommended by the insurance company

So anyways, insurance company is letting us choose the repairer now, probably so they don't get stung.

Can anyone recommend a chimney repair company or freelancer in the Galway area ??

Same experience as my inlaws. Insurance repairer made a balls of the job.
    These guys sorted it.

Based outside Ballinasloe. Website says 'midland area' but works in Galway as well. Highly recommended.

He did my parent's chimney aswell, needed to be relined, it's an old house. They found him good. He cleans my chimney twice a year, show's up when he says and is very tidy. Hoping to get him to put in a stove for me this year aswell.

Don't know what they're like but I see the vans going around: http://www.cashelchimneys.com/

Worth giving them a ring for a quote.

Did you ring the original guy to say that the insurance company said we did some bad work? I'd get on to him because it's his responsibility.

I think the insurance company has been in touch with him about all this.

Piece in yesterdays Sunday times on this chimney issue...

Turns out over 75% of the repairs carried out by the guy based in Oranmore have to be redone. Over 500 jobs in all to be retrofitted.

Here is a copy and paste from the Sunday times . 6 oct 2013
It does say the problems are from cosmetic plastering works to problems with joints in chimney flues .And NONE of the chimneys raised any immediate safety concerns. So maybe 500 repairs sounds worse than what it is . Either way I can't find any response from the company . If any1 knows of a statement or response from the chimney company can you please post a link to it here . 2sides to every story , I would like to know because I need a repair done to my chimney soon.( maybe this company is the best to choose now and will do every job to the letter of the law for fear of another story like this poping up)

    Ok here is the story

A n insurance company faces a bill of more than €1m after it discovered almost 500 chimney repairs carried out by its recommended builder in the west of Ireland were defective.

FBD, which has more than 10% of the Irish property insurance market, is surveying all 691 chimney repair jobs carried out by contractor Vincent Finn between 2009 and 2012.

Following the receipt of six complaints earlier this year, FBD decided to review all cases where the contractor carried out repairs.

Finn owns Finnfort Developments, a chimney repair company based in Oranmore in Co Galway. According to company records, Finnfort Developments owns 33 business names including Chimney Repair Ireland Experts, Dublin Chimney Repairs Specialists, and Midland Chimney Repairs.

The firm, wholly owned by Finn, had shareholder funds of just over €1m in its 2012 accounts.

Conor Gouldson, company secretary of FBD, said the insurer had discovered a “startling” amount of problems with chimney repairs carried out on its customers’ houses.

“We looked at these complaints and they all had merit,” said Gouldson. “We moved to manage the situation and solve the problems.

“This is a really tough situation that we find ourselves in. I’m really proud of what we’ve done to remedy this and the plans we have to bring it to a conclusion.”

Gouldson said FBD appointed an experienced loss adjuster to inspect the 691 homes. With 95% of the inspections completed, the survey shows 75% are in need of remedial work.

FBD said this ranged from cosmetic plastering works to problems with joints in chimney flues and some chimneys performing poorly. It said none of the chimneys raised any immediate safety concerns.

“We’ve assembled a panel of builders who are ready to commence work and all the follow-on work will be done in the coming months,” said Gouldson.

“We have written to 100% of customers affected. Obviously we will try and do this with minimum intrusion. The work will be undertaken under the direct supervision of an engineer who will also certify the quality of those works upon completion.
