In the US, a cable TV and ISP, Verizon, are making a push to introduce a new model in the way they provide access to their customers. Instead of all data being given the same priority, there will be a creation of a 'fast lane' and a 'slow lane'. If companies pay a fee to Verizon, they'll get their service in the former, allowing customers to access it quickly in relation to the slow lane which I suspect will be quite slow indeed. This would mean that only those with pockets deep enough will be able to get their service seen on Verizon's network, effectively locking a lot of emerging Internet services out of the market place.

Of course, this is being seen as totally unethical and against the principles of 'net neutrality but they can make this push because they have the lobbying power as well as a total monopoly in some areas. Would Eircom be above ever trying this kind of thing? Is this the encroaching, sad future of the Internet?
