Energy Saver Bulb Pop

An energy saver bulb in the kitchen just blew with a pop, fizzle and a bit of smoke. It also tripped the mains. I've never known a light bulb to trip the mains before and there is a bit of a smell. Any thoughts? We just moved in so am worried it's the wiring and we're going to be replacing light bulbs every week.

common enough just change for another one (some of the cheaper brands are very crappy)
