Have seen truagh playing a few times this year - they are a good tough outfit - typical Monaghan team - that's meant in a complimentary way :)

When will they decide on the venue's for the All Ireland semi finals or have they already? The Castlebar Croke's game could be a good one

I have heard from a very unreliable sources that Castlebar v Crokes will be on in Ennis, which makes sense, but as I said the source is unreliable.

Ha - was talking to someone in the Crokes today and they were saying that Portlaoise was the likely venue.

I had thought Limerick or Ennis would have made more sense.

    Grain of salt.

I would have thought that Ennis would be the best venue, suppose we'll know in the next few weeks

    Portlaois ?
If they were doing a double header perhaps, but it would be crazy for Castlebar v Killarney on its own

I would have thought Thurles would be chosen for Castlebar v Crokes. Thats where they played a Dublin team last year.

Thurles is totally off the beaten track for Castlebar fans.
Ennis is the only sensible location.

Lad I was talking to is a Croke official; said it wasn't confirmed but that was what they thought likely at the moment.

Thought it was a bit strange myself at the time but didn't ask any follow-up questions.

Wonder if there might be some sort of provincial council politics behind it.

Personally Limerick/Ennis would suit me a fair bit better and I'd imagine most supporters.

For Castlebar fans coming to Limerick/Ennis they would have very good road from Galway to Limerick. Not too sure about the road from Castlebar to Galway but I presume it would be reasonably direct.

Going to Portlaoise or Thurles from Castlebar strikes me as a bit of a messy route cross-country.

    Exactly
Ennis/Limerick is very direct via Galway.

Portlaois/Thurles is, let me think, across to Athlone or Mullingar and God knows where after that

Just saw that the venues and dates have been released for the All-Ireland intermediate and junior club semi finals in football and hurling. They all seem reasonable apart from Kilnadeema-Leitrim (Galway) and Youghal (Cork) being down to play in the Gaelic Grounds in Drogheda! I'd imagine (hope!) that is a misprint and its the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Still no word on the venues for the senior games

Castlebar - Tuam - Ballinasloe - Athlone - Birr - Roscrea - Thurles/Portlaoise. Good roads = Ballinasloe - Athlone and Roscrea - Portlaoise. The rest are boreens. Ennis or Linerick are the obvious venues. Killarney don't have a good road to Thurles either. Do Croke Park need a road map?

Portlaoise is a surprising choice for the Crokes Castlebar games isn't it?

Can't fathom out why the Mitchels Crokes game is'nt fixed for Ennis?

It is an extra half hour for both teams but better roads and a better venue. More practical for neutrals anyway.

I'll give you that Portlaois is a better venue, but that's about it.

ridiculous choice of veniue for both clubs a fair treck for both of them as well considering there were far beter grounds and stadiums available the likes of limerick ennis salthill or even birr

this happened a couple of years ago for a junior all ireland semi final between the kerry and tyrone champions when rosscommon or castlebar were available and much more suitable for both teams but then again the head man in the gaa at the moment is a laois man so i soppose make hay while the sun shines (and pay the local floodlight bill)

Will there be extra time played in the Semi-finals or a replay in the event of a draw?

Headless decision to bring Castlebar and Crokes fans to Portlaoise, its a nightmare to get to from Mayo. Limerick or Ennis were perfect choice for both sets of supporters and no clash with Munster in Limerick.
Obviously owed Portlaoise a "stroke" so this what they are at. Idiots to say the least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,265 ✭✭✭ciarriaithuaidh

It looks ridiculous when you hear the choice of venue for Crokes v Castlebar..but when you think about it, the other options were:
    - Ennis: Best geographical choice, but dilapidated venue and parking is poor.
    - Limerick: Would be seen as unfair given Crokes have played there already.
    - Thurles: 272 mile round trip from Castlebar and much of it over poor roads. Crokes now have a 272 mile round trip to Portlaoise, but I guess it is over much better road, mainly motorway these days in fact given the Castleisland/Abbeyfeale road upgrade...

So, crazy on the surface, but when you dig a little, I don't think its THAT crazy...

I just remembered the hilarity of Syferus moaning about how unfair it was to Ballymun being brought to Thurles last year..he disappeared fairly rapid when it was pointed out Crokes actually had a longer journey!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭TaosHum

Mount Leinster having to go up to Newry to play Lougheil is a very favourable choice for the Ulster champions.

Supporters in Carlow not too impressed.

agree to an extent about cusack park it is almost all terrace and the seated stand is alot older then myself, this despite most clubs in west clare building stands on there grounds some ie kilmihil and miltown have nearly bigger capacitys when it comes to seating. its almost embarrassing

i doubt castlebar would see too much wrong with playing in limerick to me it would have been the obvious choice

Was talking to some more people from the Crokes a bit back and they said that Castlebar wouldn't agree to play in Limerick because Crokes had played there already and that neither side wanted to play in Ennis.

Not really sure why Castlebar didnt want to play in Ennis but the vibe I got from the Crokes folk was that they thought the pitch itself was a bit tight, and possibly not in the best condition.

yeah it dose become unplayable after any sort of bad wether and needs a massive upgrade but the county board have no plans to do anything a bout it given the fact they have enough local venues to fall back on the only good thing about the ground is its location in the town centre

What an infantile reason for refusing to play in Limerick. Next we'll have Kerry, Cork, Galway etc. refusing to play the All-Ireland final in Croke Park on the grounds that Dublin have played there already.

Interesting as I haven't heard that out of the club and queired it tonight with one of the officials and there was no choice in the matter, all direction from Croke Park. They wanted Limerick or Ennis but Portlaoise was chosen as Ennis was expected to be unplayable and Limerick wouldn't provide the staff on the day.

because for two reasons 1 they are far closer venues then portlaoise and 2 the expected crowd would be no greater then 3 or 4 thousand so why the need for the big venue there would be a far better atmosphere created at the smaller venues

The lads I were talking to weren't Crokes club officials but would be pretty well up on what's going on.

Have to say that I never heard of a GAA game cancelled/moved because the stadium weren't willing to provide staff before.

Anyway the decision is made now.

On Portlaois the sense I got from the Crokes lads was that some were viewing it as an opportunity to right past failings as Portlaois doesn't exactly hold the happiest memories for them.

Not sure why semi-finals should be held at neutral grounds anyway. Toss for home advantage and then play the game at the ground closest to winners that is suitable, in this case McHale Park or Fitzgerald stadium. That way you will get bigger crowds and better atmosphere.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Always_Running

Now the debate on choice of venues is drawing to a close who do you think will win these semi finals?

For me St Vincents and Castlebar to win.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,439 ✭✭✭Boots234

I fancy Crokes to win but the other semi is very difficult to call, maybe Vincents

Fair enough so what you meant was they are more suitable venues, in my defense that is not what you said!

Crokes easy enough and Ballinderry after extra-time.

Terrible idea to not use neutral venues. AISFs are very well attended for what they are.

You'd lose more than you'd gain by playing them at a club's county ground if the distances are large.

As a Galway man I'm obviously a huge Canning fan but that was disgraceful. I think his status within the game may well have saved him there to be honest. Incredibly stupid from such a great hurler as he must know that if he got a red there it was the game gone for Portumna. He's having a fine game apart from that though.
