From what I've read on Facebook, there's been some complaints over it because of the noise.

On the Shannon airport fb page or just in general? It was very heavy on departure if you watched it on fr24 took quiet sometime to climb to cruising altitude.

Anyone know why is there an EL AL Boeing 737-800 heading towards the Atlantic Ocean, it took off from Luton. Reg is out of sync too because another EL AL B737-800 departed Luton this morning back to Tel Aviv..

I don't think it's an fr24 error at least..think I saw it take off from my bedroom window about an hour ago. Another big noise.

    Why, where do you live?

Just seems strange that an EL AL B737 would be venturing out to the Atlantic, its always a 767 or 747 or 777 they deploy foe transatlantic ops, actually mainly 747/777 ops..

Interesting!! Bit of a coincidence that it's an Aer Lingus jet. Outside chance of EI needing to shift around aircraft for some reason?

ETA: According to the reg, the aircraft also did Dublin-Cardiff...

Yep from Cardiff. Tech seems as good an answer as any. Hope the pax haven't been disappointed with the lack of ATR :pac:

Could be due to the Heineken Cup Final in Cardiff yesterday. Extra capacity for returning fans?

I'm sure they will be happy enough I'm sure there will be a few empty seats to move to if you don't like the person you are sitting beside :)

I've been told by family that they love them but personally I'd rather not be on such a small aircraft tbh.

A32x for rugby on CWL is normal; they usually don't highlight it much in advance but this time around there is an A320 showing for the Six Nations weekend.

As explained below, it was to bring fans to Cardiff for the Heineken Cup. Unfortunately none of the provinces got into the final but plenty of fans had gotten tickets and booked flights in expectation:).

Extra capacity on other flights to BRS etc also.

ATR cabin pressure is typically between 3 and 5000 feet, a little easier on the ears compared to 8000 feet cabin pressure on jets.

8000 feet cabin pressure on jets.
If we operated at the same levels as the ATR, our cabin altitude would be sea level :) At 41,000 feet we achieve a cabin altitude of 6000 feet which i believe is the same as the 787.

That's nice to know, but how many going to the Heino cup will be on a gulfstream:D

Beat me to it. Still burning off fuel.

A passenger jet had to burn off thousands of litres of fuel before it could safely land in Shannon after suffering a navigation systems failure.

US Airways flight AWE-711 was travelling from Zurich in Switzerland to Philadelphia in the US and was about 200km west of the Clare Coast when the problem emerged.

Shortly after 1.40pm yesterday the pilot contacted air traffic controllers in Shannon to inform them that he had no navigation systems. He told them he would have to abort crossing the Atlantic and divert to the airport.

The crew of the Boeing 767-200 made a U-turn and routed back towards the Clare coast, where they entered a holding pattern in an effort to burn off excess fuel. This was to ensure the jet could land within safe landing weight limits.

After spending over an hour circling over the Atlantic off the Clare coast the flight landed safely at Shannon shortly before 3pm.

The flight was later cancelled while the 110 passengers and crew were accommodated in hotels in Limerick and Clare last night. They were due to return to Shannon early today to continue their journey to the US.

It was the third time this month that a US Airways flight had to divert to an Irish airport – with crew members falling ill on two recent flights.

Is that the thing that inspects airports and makes sure their technical equipment etc is up the scratch?

    ETA: Yep http://www.cobham.com/about-cobham/mission-systems/about-us/aviation-services/airborne-special-mission-operations/products-and-services/flight-inspection-services.aspx
