not sure tbh, that callsign is usually used for Omni air carrying us troops.

CAMBER is used by any approved US airline carrying out DoD charters, not just Omni. Used to use REACH but that is now reserved for purely military movements.

Some other airlines which frequently use CAMBER over Ireland include Delta, National and North American. World used to be the primary one in our skies until its demise, Omni and Delta picked-up most of the business.

would it not make more sense security wise to use a standard code as opposed to one that makes it obvious who is on board?

    From FR24-

Antonov An-225 Mriya, the world's biggest aircraft, is now en route to East Midlands Airport. ETA is 19:45 local time (18:45 UTC). Flight route will be Riga - Rönne - Hamburg - Groningen - Amsterdam - Southend - Luton - East Midlands.

Follow the An-225 live on http://www.flightradar24.com/ADB5983/38e9e64

It's actually stopping in Luton? How are these airports handling the world's biggest aircraft?! Is it simply due to low load? Should see it out my window if it takes off from LTN.

ETA: Damn I guess you just mean the actual route.

Well I watched it take off in Prestwick anyway, don't know its destination!

Some noise from it, and smoky engines too! :D

Challenger C-FBCR just departed Shannon, westbound.

Would anyone know what aircraft took off from DUB three mins ago? It wasn't on FR24, I heard it but I couldn't see it.

    Oscar? b757?

N618WF inbound Shannon at this time. Bombardier Global 6000.

Nimrod 7, was it a prop?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 26,402 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peregrine

It didn't sound like a prop. It sounded like a jet and loud, that's why I went to the window to check. I missed it, went on FR and nothing.

    Maybe I'm just hearing things..

Boeing 767 OY-SRJ took off from DUB a short time ago. he would be fairly loud if heavy.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 26,402 Mod ✭✭✭✭Peregrine

Thanks, Oscar! It was probably him.

Just looking at the app a few mins ago and thought this a bit strange.
Why would they take this route and not just head West after takeoff?

There may be a number of factors. All aircraft fly what is called a Great Circle route which is a lot shorter that what looks like a direct route on a flat map. A Great Circle route takes account of the earth being a sphere.

Another factor is there is due to be some poor weather south of Iceland as can be seen in the link above. The variance of NATS tracks is a subject in itself.

    Nothing unusual though.

Must be that so, it just looked a bit odd with all other US bound planes heading West. Cheers

So AWE777 could have been taking the A track, or simply the ETOPs category for the aircraft could have been downgraded so in turn that means the aircraft needs to be closer to diversion airports - Flying that track near Iceland and South of Greenland would comply with those requirements depending on the minutes required it needs to be in reach of a diversion airport.
