And landing directly facing the departure route? Though emergencies probably mean take whatever runway and direction in most instances I guess?

Is ATC supposed to use English always?

Not in France, if you can speak french you are expected to converse with ATC in french

Well according to fr24 it's on the ground and taxiing so doesn't seem like any cause for concern.

Spanish air force out of Madrid headed northeast AME4567, no destination so I assume it wouldn't be going to war area because it's visible. Would I be right?

Any know why united airlines going over Ireland at the moment is using call sign AOA900 rather than UAL****?

French ATC will speak in English, as per international rules. However flights within France will be addressed in French as per local rules. Of course 'French' international flights will usually speak in French too. Personally I think it's a rubbish rule, as it really does take from non French speaking pilots situational awareness, but there you go.

    Depends...
The French ATC will speak French to local carriers...
Spanish ATC will speak in Spanish...
Chinese ATC will speak in Chinese...
Brazilian ATC will speak in Portuguese...

Can be detrimental to situational awareness at times.

Then there's JFK ATC, apparently it's something approximating English at times!!:P

Someone reminiscing? AOA was one of the very early airlines to operate to Shannon.

I seem to remember hearing about a few incidents at CDG due to non French speaking pilots not being aware of the location or intentions of other aircraft around them.

I'd say if it were your first time there, in low visibility and not a word of French it could be stressful. However that may have been in the days before ground radar.
