Unfortunately, as already mentioned in my log, following medical advice, I won't be able to toe the start line with you. My plan is however, to be on the side lines, at the finish line and of course in the pub afterwards.

Enjoy the taper madness. Stay healthy and well and don't do anything new or stupid over the next few weeks. I'll see you in Berlin.

Sorry to hear your news Ferris B - That's crap.

The Hurling replay is on the Saturday - Does anyone know if the Oscar Wilde is the best handiest place to watch this the day before the race itself?

I'm looking for somewhere that will have the golf on.
Maybe I should avoid an Irish pub with that in mind?

I dont know the Oscar Wilde Pub at all, but I suspect they will be showing the hurling, but they may have plenty of tvs etc so might be showing both.

Just a quick one folks to make sure you have checked your startpass for your block allocation. I had a quick glance at mind and noticed that I was in block H which is 4:15+. I have emailed them requesting a change and had to send them written proof of lower time.

They say that they allocate based on the time you gave them when you register but I don't remember being asked for one. I appear to have been given last block based on the fact that they have no time registered for me.

Hopefully, I can get this sorted before I travel as I imagine that it would probably take ages to do it at the EXPO.

Block H is the third wave.
    A, B, C, D & E are wave one. F & G are wave two.
What block are you in now?

I'm in block D. Anyone else in with me?

Where do you see what block you are allocated? Its probably staring right at me but I don't see it. My submitted time was 3:01 so I assume I'm in block D. From startpass - TO: / Chip: / 03:01:26 /

It doesn't say, as far as I can see. I'm assuming I'm in Block D based on the same logic as you ;)

Looking like I will be in Block E, although given I'll be just trying to 'get round' I will drop back to Block G I reckon.:(

Where is it we're seeing what block we're in?

Have my start pass, but dunno where to look....

    It doesn't.
It should have your time on the start pass though.
You're allocated your block based on that.

If you download the startcard on your phone using the specific app it tells you what your starting block is (Mine is G) G is probably correct for me but I dont remember giving a time either.

On another note I just realised that I ordered the Finishers T-Shirt (100% Cotton) as opposed to the Climacool event t-shirt - I wonder will I be able to change this at the expo? Small problem I know, but still, annoying.

Have requested a change to D.

Yes it was on the startcard that downloaded to my phone that I saw the Block no. On the printed version it says: TO: / Chip: / / 1970 / MAL as opposed to a time so I presume that is why I am back there. If you have submitted a time and it is on the printed version as per Loughie's post above you should be in the right block.

Have added my bib number. I had put off touching this table again until the last minute in the hope of being able to revise my predicted finish time down closer towards the magic sub-3 but I just don't have it in me I don't think so I'm not going to kid myself any longer!

Where are you getting this info? Past experience? I've searched around and can't see any info on start blocks or waves. The only thing I can see is for the skating.

I'm in Block E. I'm assuming that's going on the previous race time I put in (3:17) and not the predicted time I entered when I registered. I'm assuming Block E is the 3:15 to 3:30 pen then? Which isn't really ideal for the time I'm targeting...

Yeah that's 3:15 - 3:30. I don't think that will be an issue tbh. I had no problems with congestion when I ran there before. The streets are pretty wide. You should be able to get up to that pace fairly quickly.

Ah, cool. I hadn't seen that pdf before. Thanks for that.

I might see what I can do about shifting about up a block anyway at registration, for all the difference it makes. Either that or just sneak up / hop barriers on the morning. Even if just to make myself feel a little better! I know it says you need proof of a better time, but it's a case of chicken and egg.

If you line up on the left (over a kind of traffic verge in the middle of the road) you get away very quick. Everybody tends to line up on the right as that is where the entrance to the pens (and the toilets) are.
I did this the first year I did it and got over the start line faster than some people 2/3 blocks ahead of me.

Then move back to the right early as the first turn in the course is over that side ;). I'm planning to follow the blue line as closely as possible this year.

Small tidy up....the OCD got to me at last. I couldn't wait any longer for Murph or Yaboya to do it for me :D

Also got confirmation back that they have registered my time from Dublin last year so that should correct the starting block allocation issue for me. It means I should be in Block D to watch Yaboya shoot off along the blue line to hunt down the Kenyans :pac::pac:

Training hasn't quite gone to plan but ran the Athlone half in 84:59 on Saturday so will target sub 3. Injured my hamstring over the August bank holiday weekend doing my first 20 miler, as a result have missed a few of my long runs. Had planned on 3*20mls and 2*22mls but have only done 2*20.

    Hoping for cool, damp conditions.

Hope everyone is tapering well. Have a Q regarding pre-race meals etc. when racing abroad. I have done one marathon abroad, Boston 2012, and found it hard to get my favoured meals night before and breakfast. I'm a bucket of porridge man with two slices of toast and jam and a strong coffee. Anyone any tips on how to keep their fuelling as close 'to home' as possible?

I have done one marathon abroad, Boston 2012, and found it hard to get my favoured meals night before and breakfast. I'm a bucket of porridge man with two slices of toast and jam and a strong coffee. Anyone any tips on how to keep their fuelling as close 'to home' as possible?

Just plan for it 1) check with the hotel in advance or check out if there's a convenience store nearby, 2) bring the Flahavan's porridge in the ready mix tubs, toast and jam should be easy I would expect.

Otherwise taper moving along as slow as ever!

Plenty of Aldi's & Lidl's in Berlin along with other stores. No problem getting whatever you need. Bring your own stuff if you're worried, but I don't envisage any problems. They were around four times cheaper than the branches here last time I was there too.

hi there. First of all good luck to everyone and I hope you enjoy the day and of course, achieve your targets! This will be my 4th marathon and I'm hoping to break the 3. Training has gone well but I've not had a chance to get in a predicting race so will have to wait and see!

I'm concerned about hydrating during the race - all the more if it's on the warmer side. I would have a reasonably high sweat rate.

I hear they are using paper cups - yikes. In my experience if you don't walk with it, more goes on the ground than in your mouth (that is, whatever is left in it once you mange to get it in your hand!) - and I don't like to walk and break momentum.

I'm hoping to get a bottle from my girlfriend and friends father at 13K and 30K but I could of course miss them as we have no idea if the crowd will be 7 people thick at the spots we pre-arrange. I have a hydration backpack that I wear on LRs here but I'm not keen on wearing it on the day.

I see there are personal refreshment options but as is warned, the chances of finding your bottle are probably nil unless you camp out at the table!

So any general advice on hydration and fuelling for Berlin based on experience of paper cups here or elsewhere (and other general advice in this area).

    thanks

Hi Ice, good luck with your sub 3 attempt. Hopefully, i will see you along the way somewhere.....maybe we might even get together with Loughie and Caprica to form an informal pacing group depending on strategies.

I don't like the cups either. I too hope to pick up some water along the way from friends and family that are travelling with me. However, pardon the pun but I won't be sweating it if I don't. My back-up plan is to carry a small plastic bag in my shorts or gel belt, if I wear one and if I struggle with the cups and am in need of fluid then I will have two options 1) stop momentary and walk and risk of loss of momentum or 2) pour the water into the bag and suck it through a hole in the bottom of the bag........will make the call on the fly depending on what I think I need on the day. Hopefully if it is a warm one I will make the right call early enough and before getting dehydrated:)

Seems to be very sunny and warm (mid 20's) in Berlin this week but the extended forecast (for now at least) is showing it as about 15 degrees and overcast with a chance of rain on race day...
