Does anyone know what the plastic pipe looking thing is beside outside wall in patio? Is it ok to cover it up? Thanks.

Post a pic and you'll get a better answer - might be the radon vent point.

Thanks Astrofluff. Pic attached I think though hard to see it clearly.

Was there a cover ever on it - grille or capped? Also, what size is that pipe?....just cannot make out what it would be at this stage.

On a separate note, I trust you are laying a patio taking into account building regulations part C 'site preparation and resistance to moisture'? ;) Where's your DPC in relation to the patio level?

No, never a grille or cover on it.
    Thanks for advice.

Turn your sink tap on and wait a minute. Do you see water flowing through?

The thing that baffles me is that is a black pipe going below ground...these are usually terracotta coloured pipes, unless it was intentionally for a soil vent pipe connection?

Also, you need to tell us where you are, what estate?

The radon barrier, collection piping, sump(s) and excavation pipe(s) are put in place as a preventative measure, so that if radon gas is found to be accumulating beneath the house it can be directed away.

Under the Building Regulations every new house has to be equipped to do this. If a high quantity of radon gas is found (through tests) then a vent pipe with an extractor, if necessary, can be put on to the radon extraction point on the footpath.

Until then the extraction point on the footpath is just capped off, which is what happens on every new house.

It is down to each individual occupant to test their own house for radon.
