I've no idea what this message means but it's been popping up on my screen now for a while and I'd be delighted if someone could tell me what it is and how to get rid of it.

It means the site you are trying to visit, while allegedly a 'secure' site, as in internet banking etc, has some problems with its security certificate. I wouldn't put your credit card in there ....

Yeah, that's what I thought. However the message appears before I open a browser.

Maybe the Windows event log might help track it down

Okay, you'll forgive my ignorance but what's that?

It would appear you have a startup programme which uses the Internet Explorer engine to display content, possibly a widget, weather program etc. Use MSConfig to stop all the junk starting up then see if it stops the problem

Well, I tried stopping anything unnecessary but the problem persists.

When I click View Certificate I get this:
    Issued to: java-dl-esd-secure.oracle.com

Issued by: Geo Trust SSL CA

    Valid from: 28/5/2013 to 01/06/2014

Googling java-dl-esd-secure.oracle.com I came up with this which may have something to do with it.

Updating Java from www.java.com should solve this problem :) .

Try updating Java via Ninite and see if it helps. Or even better uninstall Java if you don't use it :)

    Do I need Java?

EDIT: Just Googled my own question and it seems I don't.

Not usually, but you may have software or use websites (ROS, Online banking etc.) where Java is a requirement
