Normal procedure after a body is found

Is it standard practice for a house to remain under police guard after a body is discovered, or is it only when fowl play is suspected? A body was discovered in a house locally today. The body has been removed but the Gardai are staying there over night. The deceased had been in bad health so the presumption locally is that it was natural causes. I'm curious as to why they're staying? Is it normal? It's suspected that the person was dead for a few days. Would that make a difference to how they deal with things?

Post mortem will be carried out on the deceased unless they attended a doctor within the last week. Once its determined there is no foul play they'll release the scene.
Until then they have to work on the assumption it was foul play till otherwise determined. Releasing the scene and then finding out it was foul play would scupper any prosecution from the get-go. Better safe than sorry.
