    Hey guys,

Im currently a 2nd year grad med, and was wondering how i would go about shadowing a pathologist on a couple of their shifts to see exactly what the job involves etc.

My main problem is i have no idea where to start looking or who i would contact to try arrange it?

any help would be much appreciated

Depends on the hospital. I just went to the St. James's website, Consultants A-Z http://www.stjames.ie/Departments/ConsultantsA-Z/
All you have to do is Cntrl F 'Pathology' and you'll get heaps, including some email addresses.
This will probably work in other hospitals, though SJH is a tertiary hospital so possibly more specialities.

Have you had any lectures in Pathology yet? If so speak to your lecturer at the end, express an interest and see will s/he take you for an elective.

It would be better/easier if you could get the email address of a pathologist, especially one affiliated with your college or teaching hospital(s) and email them from your college email. That way they can verify that you are a med student.

You would need two to three consecutive days to follow a specimen from start to finish to gain a good idea of the work. And to view a Post Mortem if the hospital does them. or just a day to get a snapshot of the job.

Do you have any areas of pathology that interest you? Any other areas of medicine that interest you? Any favourite organ systems? Different hospitals have different specialities with pathologists sub specialising.

Don't know if I'm allowed to mention names but the prof of pathology in CUH is a gent, I'd drop him an email.

I did a month with the State Pathologist, write and ask her, it was fantastic hands-on experience

i will try this dingle, as your right going through my uni email/ getting someone attached to the university could be alot easier...im in UL so im going to try get in touch with the pathologists in the regional.....yea ideally id love to do 2-3 days to get a good snapshot as you said, not sure if i would be able to observe a post-mortem but would love to as i think it would be a great learning experience seeing the whole process.

I dont really have a particular area of interest but hopefully if i can do some shadowing it could let me focus in.

quick question, would histopathologists purely be lab based analysing the sections?? or does it entail everything??

    thanks guys

Once you have a legitimate reason you can observe a Post Mortem. They're just not open to the general public.

The core work of a histopathologist is identifying the pathology(ies) present in a specimen (macroscopic and microscopic). By morphology and other companion diagnostics like immunohistochemistry and molecular/genetic testing.
They also contribute to MDTs, train NCHDs, lecture, research, act as clinical directors of labs, departments, hospitals/companies and regions.
