Extending My Connection

I have the standard black eircom modem downstairs in my house beside the home PC, I can't really move it from where it is. Im trying to get internet to 2 computers and a laptop upstairs and on the other side of the house. I've managed to get an Ethernet cable up there so what next? Do I purchess a router like that? Plug the Ethernet cable into and then I have slots for 4 more Ethernet ports and wifi in that part of the house?

you'd be more looking for an 4-port access point as oppose to a router, however it can be hard to find a decent one.

Other then that if you are using a router plug the network cable into one of the 4 LAN ports (not the internet one). Then via the webinterface change the IP address to be on the same range as the Eircom router making sure it's on a different IP and also not an IP that can be given out by the Eircom DHCP server. Then disable the DHCP on the router so it doesn't conflict with the Eircom router and you should be fine.

Pick up a couple of these, add more as you need them. Work quite well even through powerstrips etc.

That's terrible advice. The OP already ethernet cabling to the new location. All she needs now is a router/switch/access point to connect the multiple machines to the one cable.

Anyway what's wrong with that advice? It's what I did and works well for me. Beats running visible cables etc. So you suggest more cables to the two other machines, the other in another room upstairs.
