The full route of the 2014 Giro d'Italia was announced in Milan yesterday, including full details of the three Irish stages that will make up the opening weekend of the three-week race next May. -

Stage three will begin in Armagh and veer north before dropping into Richill and contesting the second mountain of the Giro at Markethill after 32km. This fourth-category climb will be followed by another at Fews Forest 20km later with the race heading south of the border at Forkhill and going through Castlebellingham, Dunleer and Drogheda.

After 137km, there will be an intermediate sprint in Balbriggan, the home town of Ireland's first ever world cycling champion Harry Reynolds, before the race continues along the coast towards Skerries, Lusk, Swords, Malahide, Portmarnock, Clontarf and the finish at Merrion Square, Dublin.

    Great News for DCN,

All three of Ireland's World Tour professionals – Nicolas Roche, Dan Martin and Philip Deignan – have expressed their eagerness to ride the race, while Mark Cavendish, Vincenzo Nibali, Ivan Basso, Bradley Wiggins and Cadel Evans also look set to ride.

Great news for DCN to have these world class athletes on our door step.Great for Balbriggan and Reynolds family. Pity it could not come through Rush and honour another 2 great cyclists Sonny Cullen who lived in Rush for many years and the great Matt Sands a local legend to many older people. First Irish man to win a stage in Tour of Britain and his prize for finishing 6th or 7th was £7.

Has the precise route been finalised? The maps on the giro website aren't very zoomable.

It has been finalised but the exact details haven't been released. It's fairly clear which way it'll come through Balbriggan, Skerries and Lusk though.
Should be a great spectator event and will be great for DCN on so many levels.

It would be a pity if it did not go through Rush.
The town will be locked in anyway, as there will be no way out, through Lusk, or Balbriggan, for the duration.

A great opportunity for Fingal to look it's best, I assume live TV coverage on Eurosport, plenty of action shots for the papers/magazines.

Woudl it be right to assume if the stage is going from Portmarnock to Clontarf they,ll be passing through Baldoyle onto the coast/howth road? Be great seeing it go through NCD some nice roads and scenery that should look great on tv especially if they have helicopters aswell

The Giro's choice of an Irish Grande Partenza is historic. The famous landscapes of Ireland, North and South will be on view via the global television broadcast the Giro achieves and the economic benefits that the event will generate will be immediate.

In the months ahead the Big Start 2014 will announce exciting stage details, festivals of "pink and green" and volunteer opportunities.

There's already one World Champion regularly cycling the roads around here ...

(not me alas! - but current World Scratch race champion Martyn Irvine lives and trains in the area)
