I've got an Xbox at the minute and I've been looking into reliving my childhood PS2 games. Instead of having two different consoles I've been looking at getting a PS3 because I thought that these had backward compatability and I could play PS2 games through this.

Can anybody help me out with this?

Oh the original fat ps3s are backwards compatible. There's a list on Wikipedia of games that Work on it with no compatibility issues. Most of the mainstream/popular games will work grand on it (GTA etc)

It's tricky. Only the launch PS3s will play PS2 games, but because their heat dispersion was so bad, there's not too many of them that have survived the 'yellow light of death' and those still around are susceptible to dying suddenly.

Your best option really is two different consoles.

The emulation on the european consoles is terrible as well, better off getting a cheap PS2.

many old ps2 games are pretty cheap on psn store and sometimes free with Ps plus.

Of the phat models, there was the 20,40,60 and 80gb versions, only the 60gb phat models can play PS2 games nativlely.

Think it's only the Korean and US 80gb models that can, they were made the same as the EU 60gb except HDD size. EU 80 models were restricted in PS2 titles compared to the EU 60 and US 80 that could play anything.

fair enough, but whatever PS2 title i put in worked.

Is there any disadvantages or noticeable differences in using a PS Store emulated PS2 game say GTA San Andreas, compared to playing San Andreas in a PS2. i.e. is an emulated game exactly the same?

I still have my 60 gig launch model, I worry everyday that it'll be the last day it works (dramatic I know) I'm tempted to try and get another.

The compatibility is pretty good but since it's emulation, and not great emulation it can be a bit glitchy and the framerates erratic.

It's not exactly the same but it's close. Of you can put up with the framerate being a bit worse then you'll be ok.

i have original 60gb, never had any issues playing PS2 games on it. Played PS2 Family guy game and installed new 320gb drive last week :D

You're better off with an old ps2 to be fair. The ps3 models that are compatible will probably break on you within a few months of buying it.

I got a deal on the PS2's (yes plural as they were that cheap) that I bought.

I have one old school really old one that I use day to day for Tekken mostly but I also have the slim version as a back up for the eventual demise of my phat version.

Slim version is really really small so might be the one you want if your trying to cut down on space etc..

Nothing beats the big dirty auld phat version though in my opinion!

    Adverts.ie for cheap as chips PS2's. :D

Most people wouldn't notice it but I do. You might say there's no issues but I'm not making it up:

It's only really enough to annoy on specific games or for pedantic people like me.
