Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Working this one out in my head.

    We need:
    • Austria to beat Sweden by as few goals as possible.
    • Faroe Islands to beat Austria.
    • Germany to Beat Sweden
    • Ireland to beat Germany
    • Ireland to Beat Kazakhstan
    • Ireland to beat Austria and Sweden on goal difference (currently Ireland +0 Sweden +6 Austria +8), meaning at the bare minimum, we need to score 9 goals more than we concede in the next two games.

    It's a bit of a long shot. Worth €1 at 1,000 to 1?

You're only getting 1000 to 1 on it? Poor odds.

I was guessing, but it turns out Paddy is a bit more confident :P

    Could also add

[*] Need to avoid being overall 9th best runner-up who would miss playoff.

[*] Need to win play-off against higher seeded team.

I think the only way we qualify is if Sweden and Austria go to war, as do one or two other counties in 2nd place in other groups so we don't end up as the worst second place team.

There has got to be a load of confiscated IRA semtex somewhere we can use to start a few wars

I think if you just write the "must happen" results down as simple 1-0's ....

    (ie 11Oct Sweden 0-1 Austria, Germany 0-1 Ireland ; 15Oct = Sweden 0-1 Germany , Faroes 1-0 Austria )

.... then Ireland are left having to beat Kazakhstan 8-0 on the final day.

So there you go. We only need four unlikely match results to occur (in a row) and to then follow that up by achieving our joint-ever biggest victory in a international match in order to have a chance of still being in the mix .... for a play-off game.

Jesus only 150/1 . PP taking the piss a bit there. There's a better chance of the Kildare GAA team winning the Champions League.

The only two things there that are totally off the rails are Faroes beating Austria (or anyone for that matter) and the 8-0. We're capable of beating Germany, even if it is tremendously unlikely.

As for all six things happening in a row... Yeah, we need to start planning for 2016. World cup simply isn't happening.

Just read that Germany need 2pts from 2 games to qualify.

Now, I am guessing they just might be thinking "that game in Sweden might be a toughie", and could possibly be a null points for them.

If so, they need to get the 2pts versus us, and they will. Easily.

Taking the GD in consideration 1 point will be enough for Germany. I doubt Sweden will be able to make a 15 goal difference up in the 2 games against Germany and Austria.

Saying that, considering the players Germany is missing there might be a small chance for an upset. Mario Gomez, Miroslav Klose, Ilkay Gündogan, Marcel Schmelzer, Lukas Podolski, Lars Bender, Sven Bender and Marco Reuss are all out. You probably can add Goetze to the list, as he will be playing for 20 minutes at most.

Unless a group of us can foster some form of apartheid, resulting in an international boycott in at least 3 of our group members we're goosed.

We know the Germans and Austrians might be up for it but there's no way you'll get the Swedes to play along. Tolerant ba5tards!

I'd say something like this is very possible

    Starting:
    Neuer
    Lahm Mertesacker Hummels Jannssen
    Khedira
    Schweinsteiger Kroos
    Mueller Oezil Draxler

    Options
Boateng, Westermann, Goetze, Schuerrle, Kruse, Kiessling

Loew has only chosen one striker, kruse whos fairly untested and he still wont pick kiessling over their little feud.

Their midfield and attack will probably be something like this

    Khedeira-schweinsteiger
    Muller--kroos/ozil--draxler
    kruse

Hopefully it wont be as ugly as it was in dublin...

Maybe if we ask them nicely this time they might let us be the 33rd team.

We hammer Kazakhstan, and Austria lose to The Faroes.

And Germany and Sweden get disqualified for betting irregularities.

Ask UEFA to change the rules to suit us. Wouldn't be the first time.

But we had good grounds to complain that time.

We need to ask FIFA if we can be the 55th team at the World Cup.
