Wish I could say the same. Every single red light I hit today a cyclist broke it. That being said all bar 2 were also broken by motorists. What irks me though is the idiots that assume sure a pedestrian light is fine to break which means a busy junctions such as tempelogue bridge is also fair game.

If I'm sitting at a junction and the pedestrian light goes I tend to take off once it goes orange, (if I know my set are next of course). I prefer to be clipped in and moving before the traffic behind gets moving.

So here's my commute picking up from castle knock to merrion st upper:

Castleknock gate - me and another cyclist waiting in the box, both waited for red. No cyclist breaks the lights. Passed a few cyclists in the park - I'm stopped at red lights parkgate st - the cyclists I overtook now merrily sail through a red at the courts building - me and maybe 2 others stopped.

All lights obeyed more or less down the quays - up Christchurch and on to cuffe st - have green lights at the top of the hill and red as we reach jury's. as we enter the green, through the cars that ignore the yellow box here and also the odd taxi driver that skips up left and then ducks across right on the green.

At baggot st I take a left onto merrion st - at this point I'm the only cyclist waiting my turn to go left at a red light. At least half a dozen ignore the pedestrian crossing and plough through.

Sometimes - if you're cycling reasonably slowly and cautiously - it's safe to break a red light. Look at the Idaho Stop.

Been honest I think if should be brought in. As well as being able to turn left on a red (provided it's safe to do so)

I think it's a terrible idea. As it stands, a lot of cyclists already fail to stop at the line and, once they do that, you've no idea if they're going to stop or keep going if you're coming through the junction. It forces other road users into stuff like unnecessary braking on junctions or roundabouts.

Sometimes we import sensible ideas from other countries. But perhaps Ireland's current psychology, with everyone so much at war against everyone else, and the 'common good' failing, doesn't make us the best society to start using something like the Idaho Stop, which requires mutual tolerance and courtesy.

This is very good. But until actually imported, they should not be applied.

Observed something strange while driving my car this morning. Some mad cyclist rode into ten sets of lights for some unknown reason. Maybe he didn't like the colour?

So, my five year old son fractured his tibia yesterday. While it is too late for him to enter the Vuelta this year, I really fancy his chances for Lombardia. He isn't back training yet, but apparently either was Alberto.

Its not rules of the road here, but its a reason why many garda will sensibly not enforce the law which is technically being broken, the sensible gardai preumably know what the law actually set out to prevent and so enforce it as such.

In many threads you see this confusion, I expect & hope it is mainly feigned confusion about why gardai do not prosecute people cycling on footpaths while they would go after a juggernaut breaking lights at huge speed.

I would worry about the sanity of a garda going after a 5 year old cycling on a footpath.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

I like the way you got the strawman of the 5 year old cycling on a footpath in there at the end. That was good.

They were at the peak of their powers, weren't they? The RDS gig was streets ahead of any other concert I've been to. It helped that a bunch of us got to Simmonscourt Rd early and queued so we could leg it to the front when the doors opened. We got front & centre and had a ball.
I wouldn't have been a huge fan, being more into Motorhead and Led Zeppelin at the time, but I recognised greatness when I saw it.

My brother just texted me, "Have you got a spare bike?".

I have 3 bikes, and none of them are spare. What if I got an emergency call up for the Vuelta tomorrow?

I like the way you got the strawman of the 5 year old cycling on a footpath in there at the end. That was good.
Unfortunately it is not a strawman for many people, they had not specifically talked of kids on bikes, but their argument certainly covered this. Some seemingly would want it to happen, I have seen people saying they would like the law to be enforced in every single case, not a single exception.

Loads of posters feign ignorance about why garda do not enforce the law. I suggested going into a garda station and reporting a theoretical 5 year old cycling on paths, or asking why it is tolerated, and this might answer the question they pretend not to know the answer to. Not once did any of them come back and say "ah here, sure that's ridiculous, you know I didn't mean that" -so I would take their silence to mean they do in fact agree -or rather would have to agree to save face rather than admit their suggestion is ridiculous.

I have given other similar ludicrous examples to illustrate why the law is not always enforced to which there was never a response like "hmm maybe you have a point there". e.g. prosecuting a woman who illegally crossed the road to flee an attacker or large dog chasing her. There was no letup, I did want to make a mockery of these posters.

If you don't know why the garda do not always enforce the law then I don't think you should be walking the streets alone, and have far more serious things to be worrying about.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

Garda sees cyclist breaking red light.

"Hmmm. They could be fleeing a large dog. Better not stop them."

    rubadub wrote: »

Look, what people want is very simple. They want the law to be enforced for everyone else, but leave them alone because they can use their own judgement to decide if an action is good or bad.

Like the woman I saw yesterday screaming in the face of a cyclist about "red light", while she herself crossed the road when the little man was red.

This is why it is intellectually dishonest to skirt the issue and claim that it's OK to break the law in some instances on the basis that the Gardai don't care and/or it's not important and/or it's not that unsafe. The law is broken whether or not you get caught.

That would be an example of a stupid garda. Fortunately most I come across are sensible.

I am asking people to ask themselves why the gardai are not enforcing the law, I reckon most already know the answer. It really bugs me when gobshites ask questions that they already know the answer to. I am not asking if its OK to break the law.

FWIW, when i was about eight or nine, i was ordered off the footpath and onto the road by a garda, on blanchardstown main street.

It would be a nice way to bow out, but I would be staggered if he gets it. You can't switch off the road and suddenly become a "pursuiter" just like that, not nowadays anyway. I reckon you need months to properly prepare for that, unless you're a real TT specialist like Tony Martin
