Got the loan of rollers yesterday so having a go tonight. I'll be on month one of the roller plan. Everyone else is on month 4 :( But I reckon I'll peak later. Hello September! :D

Gonna attempt the club spin this weekend. Main aim is to not get lost having fallen off the back!

Separate question, I have heard turbo's aren't great for carbon bikes, rollers the same or is it ok? I would have thought the torsion was more even and road like on the rollers?

Highlight of my day: when the guy who physically shoved past me to run a red light, upon being easily caught confronted and asked 'what's the fluffing hurry you slow prick?' responded with 'Chill out man!'.

I would be lying if I said I hadn't checked the wind speed and direction this morning for some possible KOM's :pac: Don't really like doing the hunting in the rain, and my brake pads have absolutely zero braking power at the moment..missing out on gold here :(

Got pulled by the Guards this evening for not having Hi-Vis, have to say that is a first  Didn't get fined or anything like that and the guy was a gentleman, he said he'd given away his last one from the car but I got the feeling if he had one he would have forced it on me, or threatened to take matters further if I wouldn't put it on..

Can they not do random stops for spot checks (as they can for motor vehicles)? I'm assuming Zyzz was appropriately lit up (or at least his bike was)

Either way I personally would not be confrontational in the situation

I wan't disagreeing with the stopping of Zyzz, I just don't think they can make you wear high-viz, it's not a legal requirement I don't think? And not being confrontational, you can just ask why then state your case calmly and politely.

I'm shocked a guard can stop a cyclist and insist they wear high-viz! Madness! Lights yes, and more of it but high-viz no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

A garda, in uniform, can stop a cyclist.
It is not an offence, not to wear hi-viz.
A bicycle, during lighting up time must have a front light, a rear light and a rear reflector.
A garda cannot force a cyclist to wear hi-viz.
I agree with Beasty. It's usually not a good idea to be confrontational.

    Thanks for clarifying.

I wasn't suggesting being confrontational, but I would question being told to wear high-viz. That's not being confrontational, it's just asking a question. I don't think questioning something calmly and politely is confrontational, provided you aren't angry about it?

Does anyone know is the Shimano Nexus NX75 crankset only suitable for 1/8 singlespeed chains or could you run a 3/32 on it? I'm looking to set up an 8 speed cassette with a single ring on the front for my commuter and these yokes are ferocious cheap on CRC right now.

    I know, you're quite right.

If a garda, in uniform, at night, handed me a hi-viz jacket and told me to put it on, I would. Because, I don't have a rear reflector on any of my bikes, and most gardai know, that it is an offence, not to have a reflector.

Maybe time to engineer some sort of back-of-saddle/saddlebag reflector?!!

If you can order from Decathlon they have a messenger style bags on offer at the moment. Tilt 3 for about 7/8 euro . The 3 is big enough for 15" laptops.

I got the tilt 5 which is bigger and has a better looking strap for €10 and looks pretty good and as though it should withstand stuff. If I'm taking my laptop I'd be putting into a padded softshell case too anyway.

Goodness, not in this weather, though it might be a good safety idea in summer.

This http://www.wiggle.co.uk/altura-urban-dryline-15-inch-briefcase-pannier/ is what I use - says "no longer available" unfortunately, so maybe Altura has a new and improved version, though I doubt it. This is a specialist laptop pannier that clicks on with a button-press locking mechanism; the back is stiffened and the inside padded, and there's a zip-on flap that covers the hooks so you can turn it into a shoulder bag when it's not on the bike. And it has reflective stripes that show up in car headlights. A very good laptop pannier - if you can find it, I recommend it.

Sunday Business Post magazine has reviews of a Trek 8.3, Cateye nano light and Abus lock and they've a little piece on the Angel of Mons audax this month. That's some kind of healthy balanced cycling coverage of sorts.

Which bag do you have? Still up in the air over the new position so in no rush, wouldn't mind getting to a bricks and mortar store to check out their range though.

It's going to be a work laptop (up to €2000 in value) so I'm looking for 100% waterproof and that's why I was looking at the Chrome/Crumpler bags. Needs to big enough to bring clothes for the day (sans footwear which will be in the office) and not a fan of messenger bags either.

I've carried €8,000 of electronics in one of the larger Crumpler messenger bags for about 8 years now. They're great. It looks a bit shabby these days, but fine for a wet day on the bike. Comfortable over somewhat long distances too, done a few 40-50km's with it on my back.

My only issue was a 1L bottle of water cracking while I had some equipment in there. It didn't leak a drop until it was too late :(

Some poor lad came off his bike beside me today. I was in the car but had given him plenty of room thank God. It was just after a junction so was pretty slow. Hope he's OK though. Watch yourselves out there.

Closest I can see on their site is the Metropolis, definetly the largest they had at the time.

A quick three cheers for MacDonalds cycles on Wexford street in Dublin I was looking for some quarter inch ball bearing for my rear axle. After a brief out fella to our fella conversation about no one fixes nothing anymore they gave me a set for free.
I've only ever bought a few but and pieces in there and I doubt they'd see me as any kind of regular customer. Delighted they had the bearings in the first place and doubly so for the freebie.

Mods - hope the above is ok. If not please delete

I had a similar experience with them actually, I was home-making a camera mount a few years ago and they gave me a couple of free bits and pieces of various brackets and mounts. You don't get much for free these days, so fair play to them :)
