Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Can anyone tell me the best way to "store" a used cassette?
I have it all cleaned up and degreased etc but should I spray it with something to prevent rust? Or just put chain oil on it?

The survey found 95% of motorists claimed they had seen a cyclist acting illegally or dangerously on the road.

The most common infractions were cyclists breaking red lights, cycling on footpaths, and failing to wear high visibility clothing.

Has a new law been brought in?

Preferably indoors but if in shed I'd spray with WD40 or something similar.

    And most tellingly:
Last year, there were 12 cycling-related road deaths. Ten of those deaths were due to direct collision with a car or a truck

Just to add to WA's advice, I find the resealable sandwich bags very useful for storing things like cassettes, brakes and other stuff that falls into the "I'll just keep that in case I need it" category.

Lightly coated in oil or liberally coated with WD40.. I've never had to do it, but I can only draw on storing my weapon in work (I'm a soldier) and all metal parts must be lightly coated in oil when in storage (we're not allowed use WD40).

So this happened today, the latest in a long list of the saga of this wheel. (Poor next-door desk neighbour in the office was right next to it when it happened, I was out getting tea. :o ) Over the last month, I have had a soft tyre (losing 10-20 psi per day) every day, changed tyre, tube (twice) nothing on rim or tyre. New rim tape is next. Must be a spoke poking issue, it's a very old (38 yr old) wheel. The below happened because I pumped it up to hard this morning I reckon. Doh and

    Not cycling home this evening!

Is it just the photo or has the rim really bent upwards near a couple of the spoke holes?

38 years old? That's older than me - barely! Time to put it out to pasture surely?

No the rim is straight in all bar one spot, which has been hammered back in, you would hardly notice it, and even then only if you were specifically looking for it. Must be the light or something. That bit isn't in the pic though. It's out of true a bit too, 5 bike shops have tried to true it but to no avail. It's steel, so there's always a spring in it they said, and that's what's keeping it from begin perfectly true. Maybe it is time to retire it :(

Yeah the whole bike is that old. It's also older than me! Plenty of life left in the rest of him though!

No more sexy steel wheel though maybe :( Odd wheels ahead. On the plus side it'll be nice to have a bit of braking power with an aluminum rim! :pac:

Rear. I have a replacement, it's fine, but with the soft tyre and two tubes + tyre replacement it'll be the 4th time in as many weeks I have taken the tyre off. Ugh. !

My derallieur hangar is a bit loose too. It's a shake, rattle and roll situation!

Are they beadless rims (like the RR-702 below)? You shouldn't pump them to more than 5bar afaik - otherwise you're risking blowouts. If that's not enough for you, get a wider tyre or a rim with bead :)

Yep they're beadless. The front one has done year pumped up to 100 every week

Lesson learned. Only 5 bar from now on. The tyres are over 33c wide. Must measure when I get home. They're 27 by one and a quarter inches.

I like the feeling of them being pumped up really hard though, I'll get used to a softer tyre. It feels faster. It most probably isn't though, as I'm not that heavy. Will I get more punctures with them being softer?

ETA Sunday is now maintenance day!

    33mm at 100psi? Wow! I ride 35mm at 55/65psi and I'm 83kg!

    Read this: https://janheine.wordpress.com/2010/10/18/science-and-bicycles-1-tires-and-pressure/

In other words, despite the feeling, a bit softer tyres are faster on rough roads. Last saturday I've managed to average 32kmh over 40km, with a tiny help from the tailwind :)

Oh :o. I'm 60kg. But they bag does be very heavy (23-27kg) and Henri himself is 16kg.

I've been doing it very wrong then for all this time oh no :o

    The track bike goes up to 120 though, she's 700 x 23, and road bike 100-120 depending on whether it's wet or dry (she's 700 x 25).

No. As long as your pressure is high enough to avoid pinch flats then it won't make a difference to number of punctures.

With 33mm wide tyres and you saying you're reasonably light, that's probably something closer to half your 100 PSI!

    I'm 75kg and I often run 75 PSI on 28mm tyres. I like comfort :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,520 ✭✭✭Alek

Oh . I'm 60kg. But they bag does be very heavy (23-27kg) and Henri himself is 16kg.

That would be approx. 100kg together, so approx. 3.5bar front, 4.8bar rear for 33mm tyres, according to that article. You can shift the pressure a bit depending on where the bag is on the bike :)

I made a little calculator based on this for my own use, its attached to this post.
The track bike goes up to 120 though

Its a different story altogether for going in circles on a smooth track :)

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,855 Mod ✭✭✭✭eeeee

    Thanks!

I can't put anything on the carrier now as the new tyres are ballon-y and they rub.

God you live and learn. I just assumed all that stuff only applied to proper bikes, not the old man. And I do apply it to the other ones, just not poor old Henri. Ridiculous now that I think about it! I guess I must have been just lucky until now :o

Are they 27 1/4 wheels? Front or rear? I might have a chrome/steel one lying about if you're in need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭OldBean

Or if you're looking for new/cheap/cheerful, I picked up a set of these last year for my old Raleigh - http://www.parkersofbolton.co.uk/p-2890-27-weinmann-qr-front-and-qr-rear-alloy-wheels.aspx

    They're pretty bombproof.

Thanks OldBean, I have a set of wheels on another old lady I can use, I'll pop them on tomorrow.

Gosh the linked ones are cheap! When I get money the next time I may go for them, thanks for the link OldBean. .

Yeah they're 27x 1 1/4 wheels, I bought a second hand set of 5 speed 700c wheels but the teeth on the freewheel/cassette are super worn. They're old 105 hubs so good. I need to examine if they're an early free hub or a freewheel, and see if I can transplant the current freewheel onto them. I'm pretty sure they're a different attachment though, Shimano being Japanese and more modern and the current cassette being French. All immaterial as I can't afford another set of tyres to shoe them anyway at the minute! I'll gunther and see. Other old bike wheel will do for now. Plus it's alloy so will brake better yeahie! Might change front wheel too whilst I'm at it.

As an aside, for new cabling, will current cabling you can get now work on an old bike or will I have to get specialised old stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭OldBean

Yeah, those ones are incredibly cheap. And you can actually brake in the wet, which is a nice bonus.

I'm sure you can get an adapter to pop the freehub on, but it may not be worth the money... especially if you can get a cassette for cheaper. If you do end up stuck for a spare wheel, shout - I've no use for the set I have at home. There's a bit of surface rust on them, like your own, but they're fine.

Cable-wise, you're all good with modern stuff. And probably no harm if the current cabling has never been changed!

Cassette Question: I seem to have damaged the very thin washer under the locking cap on one of my cassettes. Obviously it's there for a reason but should it matter if I remove it or tighten the cap over the damaged washer?

    Thanks.

From my limited experience that washer doesn't appear to be doing much. It's single use anyway. When putting a used casette back on I generaly don't bother with the washer just tighten the lockring a bit stronger. No casette has ever become undone for me with or without the washer.

Most Shimano-compatible freehubs are 8/9/10 speed compatible. A ten speed cassette is about a millimeter narrower overall than an eight speed or nine speed cassette, so when you tighten the lockring on a ten speed cassette, when installed on a freehub body that's also compatible with Shimano eight or nine speed cassettes, you'll have about a millimeter of play. The 1mm spacer compensates for this and eliminates the play.
