Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The virus seems to be spreading, Anton Savage mentioned cyclists disparagingly this morning at the start of his show, as he's a petrol head it's almost expected of him.

A virus is not an unreasonable description of Anton Savage in general.

To be fair to Anton this morning I thought he was actually more supportive than I would otherwise expect of him as a petrol head. He was making the point that rigid application of the law would be moronic, otherwise you'd be fining 8 year olds on the path. He also went as far to say that "cycling on the path is OK if you're in a quiet little town with nobody on the path and you're not going very fast".

I don't agree with him, but I thought it was a very soft position for someone who's such a motor head.

He did say that cyclists with cameras have them so they can go looking for people who do wrong on the road. He has a point there I suppose !

This #FreeTheCycleLanes lark on Twitter is quite entertaining. I can't wait for the Prime Time special.

I thought the clamper van with the phrase "promote sensible parking" was quite funny. I don't think many people are doing it though as the pics on twitter are far from the worst examples and I imagine very few are arsed stopping for a photo on their commute.

i have a slight rattle coming from one of my shifters/brake levers, 12 year old 105. are they easy to tighten up, and if so, is there anything obvious to check for?

Life – Testing has shown the Carbon Drive belt to last more than twice the life of chains.
Gates does not recommend modifying frames as it will void the frame manufacturer's warranty and may result in personal injury or death. The belt cannot be broken and reattached, so for a standard rear triangle, you’ll need a way to get the belt through the frame. Belts also need adjustment for installation and tensioning. Thus, the reason for a purpose-built frame.

Unless you have a frame with a breakable rear triangle (eg instead of the breaks for travelling bikes in the main frame (what are they called again?), have them in the rear triangle), it seems like a ridiculous waste of money.

ISTR from reading a few reviews that the Gates system is really sensitive to implementation i.e. frame and drivetrain design. Chains just work.

Nope. They were titanium. The replacement frame has steel ones. I hope they're not worse.

The Dominos delivery drivers in the Rathmines outlet are an absolute liability. Not a week goes by that I don't see them nearly seriously injure a cyclist, themselves or even a pedestrian (by driving up on to the curb)

Did my first 40k tt today. It was horrible, yet strangely addictive and fun. My legs dont work now tho, and I feel violated. In a weird way, I am looking forward to my next one.

The ladies racing series out at Corkagh park is well worth a visit, if you're bored.

It's every Tuesday until some time in August, I think. 6:45-8PM

    They give it sox.

Lots of bike porn to be drooled over.

My thighs and ass were in bits for days after my first 40k. Never felt pain in those places before. Going from standing to sitting or vice versa was torture.
It's been a year since my last one, I think I'm ready for my 2nd attempt in July.

Registered and have a goodie bag if I go, but unsure. Guess I can just roll up trousers, stick a jersey on and go as is.

I went, was up the top for it, started 20 minutes late, some folks and some of the guides were up on footpaths and out of the lane, there was some woman with a big hat all over the place and another person nearly had a spill. Turned off to head back to work after the point. Decent craic all the same, and all but one driver seemed perturbed and that was because of the person pulling out into the wrong lane.

Ridiculous route this year. It will probably be up and down the South Wall next year (as long as it doesn't disturb the walkers or the shipping).

I was put out by the route change too, but then I pondered whether it was necessary with all the Luas works around town. It's already chaotic enough around Trinity, and not terribly great roads for a peloton at the moment.

Last year's route worked well - they probably could have stuck to that.

Also, last year the whole group moved together with the Gardai providing a 'rolling road closure' which I thought worked very well, minimised the traffic disruption and added greatly to the vibe. This year, they waited for a green light to get us out on to Pearse Street so it took forever as it was done in small groups. The event got totally fragmented with lots of people getting lost as you couldn't see the group ahead at times and nobody seemed to know the route (lots of people headed straight towards Sandymount instead of taking the left fork @ Irishtown!).

A better Garda presence would have beneficial at the roundabouts either side of the East Link toll bridge to hold off the HGVs for a few minutes. There were some absolutely terrified punters ahead of me as there was a HGV trying to squeeze past everyone on that narrow approach to the bridge.

That said, it's a nice idea and was a good excuse to drag a few people from the office out for a lunchtime spin.

at the bottom of a google search for tyler hamilton:
"Some results may have been removed under data protection law in Europe. Learn more"

first time i've seen this, not exactly surprised though.

edit: i've just been told that this appears any time you google a name.

The same thing happened in 2013 on the 'usual' route. People midway down the bunch without a Garda in sight stopped at lights and everything split up, which really took away from the 'parade' effect.

That said, it's great to see lots of cyclists waiting at a red light! :P I often think a civil obedience campaign would make a lot more people aware of just how many cyclists are out there if everyone stopped and filled up the ASBs at every red light, instead of jumping the red, entering the junction, etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,407 ✭✭✭OldBean

Nearly got squished by these chaps. Red lights, no indicators, no mirrors. The two on the left knew the light sequence and accelerated out to change lanes before the lights went green.

Tour bus driver got a hefty fright too. I copped what was going to happen coming up to the junction, but I can understand a lesser experienced person trying to go up between them to get in front.
