    Morning Folks,

I am not familiar with Killiney Hill (Park?) so I was looking for some info.

I saw some nice photos online of views from the top of the trail(?).

What is it like at night? In Winter? Is it a safe area in terms of nature (wind etc.) and in terms of humans (would be muggers, general scumbaggeriness :))?

Is it a busy spot in the evening, like around 7-8pm on a December night?

Does it have a car park and is it open in the evenings and is it far to walk from car park to the summit?

I would be grateful for as much info as possible.

    Thanks all.

Never really been up it at night so can't comment on it other than to say I don't think there's any lighting apart from maybe the car park.

Car park is open 24 hours as far as I know (at least I've never seen it shut). You'd walk to the summit in under 15 mins (assuming reasonable fitness).

I'd say your best option is to visit it during the day to suss it out yourself.

Oh it's safe from nature () & I've never seen any dodgy types up there but that's not to say they never go.

Its a great place, wonderful asset to the area, but I would avoid it after dark. Not that its dangerous from a personal security aspect particularly, but there is no lighting, the paths are uneven and hazardous and the large carpark would mainly be occupied with cars with two people in them after dark!

There are two summits, the Victoria obelisk on Killiney Hill and the old castle/keep on Dalkey hill, both are just a 10/15 minute stroll from the carpark and there are alternative routes to both. Try and get there during the day, the views are fantastic and the bit of a climb up the paths will get you energised

    Thank you both for replies.

Which of the summits would have less "people traffic"?

I was aiming for getting up there when it's dark. But maybe dusk would be a better aim considering what you are saying. hmmm

The Dalkey Hill one is quieter IMO

I've been up Killiney Hill a few times in the dark. The top is very pleasant and it's lovely to be up there all by yourself. Getting up there can be a bit spooky, especially if you come up from the Vico Road side. You've got a fair bit of deep dark wood to go through. Going up from the car park involves a good bit less wood.
A torch can be useful for lighting the path, but it makes everything outside the light much more sinister. It doesn't take me long to imagine Larry Murphy is tracking me through the trees, so I bring a torch, but never use it. I've never met anyone when I was up there. If I do, and they are also torchless, I might need a change of trousers.

If my wife comes with me, we go up from the Druid's chair side. The path is more open, wider and tarmacced all the way. Less chance of meeting the boogeyman on that side :D.

Occasionally you'll see a few empty tinnies up there, so I suspect that there's some after dark socialising going on. But I don't think there'd be any threat from those. The opposite in fact, anyone who makes the effort to go up there to knock back a few appreciates the view, even if they don't take their empties with them. I doubt if there's sufficient footfall at night for the area to be attractive for muggers.

The worst that could probably happen to you is to step in some dog poo in the dark.

If you're going up there at night to do any astro photography/stargazing there's a fair bit of light pollution. White Rock beach would be close by and much darker.

I spent a lot of time up there 'after dark' over the past few years, and while i've never had any trouble, I'd occasionally come across groups drinking etc, but I don't think that's a problem during winter, due to the shorter evenings and colder temperatures.

I guess it's the same as any parklands / isolated areas, in that you should ALWAYS be cautious on your own late at night, regardless of the area. Tell someone you're going, when you expect to be back, have full battery and a torch. Ideally go with someone, but it's not a no-go area.

It's quite calm and serene at night, especially by the obelisk overlooking Dublin, or the sea.

I live close to here and have never had any problems.
Saying that I don't advocate going anywhere on your own late at night.
Its safe as anywhere else is.

Lovely spot...walk it during the day..great views!!

Providing there's no rave on white rock ;)

Is the GF a Celestron model?

    lol

    I do my best... ;)
I only mentioned that - as in she'd be more apprehensive about wondering around a strange place in the dark, particularly if there are gangs of louts frequenting the place

About 10 years ago two guys tried to rob me one night up there, my German shepherd objected :pac:
