What if you lost your wallet/bank card outside banking hours and can't contact the bank until 8/9am the next morning?
The Bank of Ireland, like every other bank I'm guessing has a policy of cancelling bank cards once they are reported lost/stolen.  Customers then have to wait 3-5 days for a replacement to withdraw cash.  What if there were another option?
If you lose/misplace a bank card but have an idea where you left it, you access your account online and select a "Block Account"  option, temporarily blocking your own account, preventing any transactions while you (hopefully) retrieve your bank card.  Then if/once you retrieve your card, simply access your account again and unblock your account.
If someone uses your card at an ATM and attempts to access your blocked account, instead of getting the usual service options of PIN services, withdraw cash, order a statement etc., the screen displays a message like "Account blocked by account holder, confiscating card" or similar. The ATM keeps the card and notifies the bank, which in turn notifies the card owner.
If a card is lost/stolen, the card owner accesses their account online and chooses a "Cancel Card" option, which can be processed by customer services during banking hours.
Your opinion please, would this be a useful service if available?

    Good morning,

Bank of Ireland has a 24-7 lost and stolen number which is 1890 706 706 or from outside of Ireland 00353 56 7757007. They are open everyday of the year including bank holidays, Christmas, etc.

You are correct that customers would have to wait until a new card arrives but if you needed funds in the meantime, you can drop into any Bank of Ireland branch with photo id and withdraw over the counter until your new card arrives.

I will pass on your post, we do take customers account security very seriously and take all suggestions on board.

    I hope this helps.
    Thanks
    Linda
