    Whats the plan for parking?

You must be joking......parking???? This is Ireland, have you ever come across something that has been planned properly?

A lot of the bar owners in the locality will be delighted with this decision.

extend park and ride hours when events are on. problem solved and keeps cars out of the city centre.

that site is also within 3 minutes walking distance of a stop for 90% of the city bus services.

and rightly so, we will have a dedicated entertainment district in Cork for the first time around washington st south/north main street. easier to police in saturday nights ;)

Dublin's 8,000 seater national conference has a mere 320 underground parking spaces and it's rarely more than half full, despite being fully booked for events. :-)

The company that operates it will be required to implement a mobility management plan, aimed limiting, as much as possible, the increased congestion on surrounding roads.

That Dublin venue has a Luas line running outside it and its within a stones throw of the DART at Connolly Station. Can't compare that to the pitiful transport infrastructure in Cork. The traffic chaos this Brewery development will bring will be phenomenal.

Extending hours for P&R is just one element....not a problem solved. Also city bus services finish at 11.15, not exactly conducive to a night out at the events centre.

There wont be any parking according to the echo. Why would people drive to it knowing there's no parking. Public transport will have to improve to compensate. Doesn't the proposed BRT route pass close to the site?

Murmurings in the NTA indicate that Dublin is to get a radically improved night bus service, with the regional cities getting some nitelink services. So that problem may be solved.

Thats complete hyperbole. Its a 6,000 seat arena meaning a very maximum of 2 to 3 thousand cars on event nights. There are plenty of multi storey car parks in a 1 mile radius.Nobody is expecting to drive up to the front door. How many extra cars have been in the city over the last few days and there doesnt seem to be much trouble.

I think the right decision was made.Common sense prevailed and this will rejuvenate the heart of the city.

BRT is at least a decade away, if ever. People will drive and park on street of course and cause major congestion. Anyone who thinks people will suddenly flock to the bus is not being realistic.

Clampy clampy. A step change towards public transport Must take place. There will be a period of adjustment with every step taken along the way. Services must improve in tandem with disincentives for motorists.

We have public bikes now - it'll be fine...

Oh this is Ireland alright, this gets the go ahead and we all moan about it.

Not my preferred choice for where to put the thing (in relation to it being a bit of a bottleneck for traffic) but it will be a great boost for businesses & and the social scene in that area so it's got that going for it. Very handy to walk to too so hopefully that will alleviate any traffic congestion concerns.

Glad to see a decision finally made anyway, hopefully it won't be too long before actual work starts on it.

you are right, when I heard the news I started thinking of the congestion problems but suddenly I scrapped all that and thought, great, a proper sized event centre in Cork...excellent, let the acts come, the rest will sort itself out. Happy days :D

Funny as it may sound the bike scheme will come in handy for students and locals who would get the bus in on a quieter route

Paul st & grand parade & merchants quay could extend opening hours, plus park and ride.

That said I was stuck for ages trying to get from the mardyke to South mall the other day, traffic up to the Capitol was at a standstill for ages - construction nearby could make it a complete joke but I'm hoping short term pain for long term benefit

Look forward to see what's planned for it

Video here of what it could look like.
    Seen it on Examiner website.

I can't imagine how they propose to handle the traffic. But, brilliant - the city centre needs new business and this should drive a lot inwards instead of outwards.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,546 ✭✭✭kub

This is going to take a while to build, the old city walls are on that site so the archaeologists will have a job to do also.

The other site would have been placed beside the major North - South route through the city centre and would have caused untold traffic in the city centre.

Mahon Point needs to be a lesson and it looks as if people have somewhat learned it. Don't do major developments right beside key pieces of transport infrastructure.

What a waste of money, pure electioneering. We cant convince even small groups and conferences to come to cork due to lack of direct flights, the opera house had to close not so long ago due to financial issues, the groups involved in this centre decided it was unviable financially without huge additional public funding. so what is the point of this place?
So many people were all out in the street protesting about water charges and our money is poured down the drain by national and local government without a whimper

6 thousand seats with room for about 4 thousand standing for concerts, and with Live Nation running it you can be sure we'll be getting the big names, this crowd don't mess around.

Neither here nor there anymore. The decision is made, gotta focus on the positives of the chosen site. It'll be a great boost for Barrack Street & Washington Street. Loads of potential there for it to be a really "cool" side of Cork.

Is that the official capacity figures? 10k is pretty good. Sure the 3Arena The O2 The Point holds just over 14k and it has no problem pulling in big acts. The Marquee only holds 4-5k and it draws some quality acts too. 10k for a dedicated venue should have no trouble drawing big names.

No sorry thats only me talking. But looking at similar sized arena's for concerts the seating would be bought down to maybe 4000 with another 3/4 thousand standing comfortably.

Who give a f*ck about the traffic?!

    This is great news.

This. LiveNation wouldn't be involved if they didn't think they could attract talent and make money from it.

I think we should be seeing alot of acts playing the 3 arena playing here too as an additional gig which would be fantastic.
