Trademarking a name/word

    Hi,

    I want to protect a word (well it's not a word, but a new word. You won't find it in the dictionary). I don't want to start a business but in the future I may want to use this word.

    For example, in the future I may use this word on merchandise eg t-shirts, phone covers etc.

    How do I go about protecting the word/name? Do I need to trademark it? Does it matter if I don't actually do anything with it? I don't want to start a company, I just want to protect the name/word.
