Loud noise near Eyre Square?

Was walking from Eglinton Street into Eyre Square and heard a pretty loud noise, sounded like a gunshot. 20 Minutes later when I got on the bus it went down through there and on Williamsgate street (between Eglinton and Eyre Square) there was an ambulance. Friend reckons it was some eejit who let off a firework or something.. anybody know the story?

I heard it too, seemed a bit dull to be a firework. Sounded more like something falling. They are doing building work at the AIB so might have been that.
