Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This event about to kick off with the NCC 1-2 Adare and Gonzaga
Also Kieran O'Driscoll lining up for the England White Rose team

nobody asked me to spend a week on a Greek island dammit but IMO this a great event and a few Irish players get to compete with the pros
world #11 Mamedjarov 2759 is a sub! for the top seeds

first impression is that Collins a huge miss for Gonzaga and particularly because scoring is match points - you need to win or draw matches

Does anyone know how many of the 'Adare" team that 'qualified' through the NCC are actually playing in the event? There is no report on this year's NCC on the ICU website :(

Thanks. Silly me for looking in the Tournaments section where the results are supposed to be.

As suspected their average rating has gone from 2205 down to 2087. What's the point. Importing players to 'buy' the NCC only serves to deprive a deserving team of a place. Adare at natural strength would likely struggle in the Ennis.

Fair play to Gonzaga who, despite not having IM Sam Collins, have increased their average team rating a little.

Gonzaga lost 6-0 and Adare 4.5-1.5 good results for Tony Fox and Jan Heinrich who both drew with IMs, could have been even better for Adare as DJ O Donoghue had a drawn ending against another IM but wasnt able to hold it.

Gonzaga have a very tough draw tomorrow against Eynatten of Belgium. Ennis have played them before, they are a strong team. Adare have a great chance tomorrow against Monte Carlo. They have a GM on board 1 but the rest of their players are definitely beatable.

    From Susan Polgar's blog:
European Chess Club Cup – Round 1 Report

    IMG_4314-450x300.jpg

The first round of the 2013 European Chess Club Cup was held today at the Rodos Palace Hotel on Rhodes, Greece.

There were no major surprises in the Open section as the top seeded teams were paired against the lower rated opposition.

CE De Sprenger Echternach (seeded 39th) beat Schachclub MPO Maria Saal (13) by 3,5:2,5, while Nordea Skanderborg (40) stunned SK 47 Eynatten (14) with the same result. Edinburgh West Chess Club (45) held A.S.I. Bologna (19) to a tie.

David Navara from G-Team Novy Bor won his game relatively quickly and shared the impressions with the press. He said that the opening was a bit unusual, because he doesn’t play it often, but this was a favorite line of his trainer GM V.Jansa. Navara felt a bit uncertain about the whole system, but he outplayed the opponent in the middlegame.

Navara also added that Novy Bor doesn’t have a concrete objective in the Club Cup, they just want to play well. He pointed, however, that he would like a better finish than last year when the team placed 10th. In 2011 Novy Bor won the bronze medal.

Amazing blunder from the GM there (Bxb7??) Still, a great win for David; well done!

Well the blunder came in a drawn ending where the GM was pushing to win, probably playing a little on autopilot. They had been playing for a long time at that stage so probably he was a bit tired too. David had played quite accurately all the way through the game and Swinkels had to work hard so probably not that amazing a blunder all in all. GMs are human too and I've seen worse! Very nice result for David.

Yeah, and that zwischenzug hitting the rook so the bishop is placed correctly is a lot easier to miss than the Rxb7 tactic.

    From Susan Polger's blog:
European Chess Club Cup – Round 2 Report

The top seeded teams continued with crushing the lower rated opposition in the 2nd round of the Open section in http://euro2013.chessdom.com/http://euro2013.chessdom.com/.

SOCAR allowed only one draw to the Swedish team Limhamns SK as IM Bjorn Ahlander held Teimour Radjabov on the first board.

Russian teams Malachite and Saint-Petersburg had no mercy and demolished their opponents with perfect 6-0 score. En Passant did manage to snatch two draws from the 4th seed Ugra.

Alexei Shirov (Malachite) won his game rather quickly. He said he sharpened the play in the opening wanting ‘to punish his opponent for the non-theoretical move 6…Be7.’

He expressed opinion that any of the four top seeded clubs can win the Cup.

Shirov also elaborated about his activities as tournament organizer.

And from Susan Polger's blog today:
European Chess Club Cup – Round 3 Report

    Caruana+vs+Nakamura.jpg

The top teams in the Open section of the European Club Cup are finally finding stronger opposition in round three. SOCAR was challenged by O.R. Padova, while Saint-Petersburg met Peristeri.

Certainly the most closely contested matches were PGMB-Rostov (6th seed) – G-Team Novy Bor (5) and Clichy Echecs 92 (9) – Odlar Yurdu (8).

Saint-Petersburg conceded only one point and O.R. Padova took 1,5 points from the defending champions.

Malachite had no mercy and walked past Tammer-Shakki with 6-0.

G-Team Novy Bor signed an important 4-2 win and GM Nidjat Mamedov saved the day for Odlar Yurdu by equalising the score against the French team.

Norwegian GM Simen Agdestein was guest in the press room. He explained that today’s game with GM Alberto David was extremely complicated, that he was very close to winning, but just couldn’t find the right way during the time trouble.

    From Susan Polger's blog:
European Chess Club Cup – Round 4 Report

The big winner of the fourth round in the Open section of European Club Cup was Ugra who scored a narrow victory against former champion Saint-Petersburg. Five games were drawn and Anton Korobov defeated Nikita Vitiugov.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Anish Giri of SOCAR used the white pieces to bring the success in match against Clichy Echecs 92.

Malachite and G-Team Novy Bor were engaged in fearless battle on the table one. Malachite held a 3-2 lead but ...continues
