Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I need to buy a laptop soon as my one isn't upto scratch (eMachines low spec yoke)

    Criteria is...

    1)8gb Ram +
    2)750gd Hard Drive at least
    3)Good Battery life
    4)At least 3 usb ports
    5)Good speakers

It must be fast, I dont want a laptop that takes an age to start up and doesnt respond half the time when I try and play a game or do a few simple things at once.

I will use the laptop for Dj'ing, Programming (MS Visual Studio), Music related things likes reaper etc, Gaming (Mainly football manager), Surfing the net and other easier stuff like that.

I want this laptop to last also so nothing that has a 2 year life, I know it has a lot to do with the owner but you might know what I mean.

    Budget of up to €800

No operating system required? Good... ;)

€815 will get you this at PC Specialst:

I'm not a fan of hybrid drives but since you want fast and plenty storage, so be it. I really like the full HD IPS display but if you don't mind a 1366x768 display you'll get it with Windows 7 or Windows 8 for pretty much the same money.

A friend of mine got this laptop (with "real" SSD), he's using it for music stuff like Reaper and he's very happy with it.

Up to 5 hrs battery life, not to heavy and pretty slim. Not much of a gaming laptop but footie manager in low detail settings is no problem.

I nearly assumed people would recommend windows laptops as any Mac of that spec is about twice the budget!!

Windows 7 or 8 will do the trick, I'd nearly prefer 7 tbh

Why would you not be a fan of hybrid drives?

PC Specialist is one of the few places where you can still get a laptop with Windows 7.

Replace the full HD IPS panel with a regular 1366x768 display and add Windows 7 to the configuration, the price should be the same.

Because they're still platter hard drives. SSDs are shock-proof and can take some abuse. 120GB and even 240GB SSDs are not that expensive anymore... certainly more than enough disk space for a night of DJing or two. ;)

I highly recommend an SSD, purchase one with the highest IOPS you can find/afford. It makes the most noticeable real life difference.

High transfer rates in MB/S only apply to file transfers and don't really relate to real life use.

My drive is a 90,000 iops OCZ Vertex 4 and now that I've been using it for a good while now I find that I don't notice the speed, that is until I go to (ANY) computer, laptop/PC with a traditional drive. It makes any non ssd machine unbearable to use.

The fastest processor makes less of a difference than ssd/ram

You don't use most of the cpu's potential, not even I do unless I'm encoding video for which no cpu is fast enough when compressing 1080P video.
