I guess the Corolla really dominated the market. And then the Nissan Sunny, Mazda 323 etc people were probably more familiar with them. I wonder if there was much in the difference in pricing.

I think their USP was the 1.5 diesel engine. None of the competitors except the Sunny at the time (1.7l) had a smallish diesel engine. This was when tax was cc based, of course. There seemed to be as many diesel models as petrol models of them around at the time. Though as you say, the Corolla was king at the time, and rightfully so too.

I remember them when they came out. Available with a 1.3 petrol or 1.5 Isuzu diesel. They weren't a bad car actually, but For some reason they weren't too popular.

My father had two of them, both diesels, and they were a damn good car. The things that rivalled them in that sector was the equally capable Nissan sunny 1.7d and the comparatively more expensive Vw Jetta 1.6d. There was a rumour at the time that if you bought an Isuzu HGV, they'd thrown in a Gemini free of charge but I doubt that was true!!

Rust around the rear chassis legs and sills was their Achilles heel and many were sent for scrapping when the govt ran the scheme in the early nougties.

I owned a Corsa 1.5TD with a turbocharged version of the Gemini engine and it was a very quick little car! I also had short term use of a Jap import Gemini TD and it too was very quick thanks to the extra power and light weight. It was a shame that Isuzu didn't continue to import the Gemini as later incarnations of it in Japan were much more appealing to the eye and were fired by their 1.7TD lump which became very popular in Astras and Vectras of the time.

Isuzu Gemini, god there's a forgotten car. I remember them being very popular where I grew up (Kilkenny). Bit like the Dacia or Hyundai of their day. The 1.5 diesel was definitely their USP. They were a bit smaller than a Corolla or Sunny.

    I remember those.
Everyone used to be raving how good the engines were.
Wasn't it those exact engines Opel used in the Corsa 1.5d ?
