Hopefully whatever was changed is rectified though I doubt 2RN are too concerned about non Saorview approved equipment.

No it wasn't. I switched over to BBC1HD and there was no comparison in picture quality.

RTE1 was 544 wide on SD, now it's 720 wide resampled to 1440 wide on transmission and resampled to 1920 wide on the TV.

Height is same 576, but now resampled to 1080 by RTE before broadcast, which is likely better than most TV do it.

So on Widescreen (not so much on 4:3 content), yes the RTE1 quality is now higher even in the SD resampled to HD as it was reduced quality SD before! 544 x 576 rather than 720 x 576 of DVD.

Is it me or is the RTÉ ONE DOG slightly different now? The top and bottom prongs of the E in ONE have slightly upwards and downwards curved ends and the HD symbol is different looking to the HD symbol used on RTÉ TWO HD. The font also seems bolder in comparison to how it used to look and how TWO looks.

Can anyone else check this or have I gone completely mad?!

Those curved ends might just be details that weren't as sharp in SD and are clearer now.

I think the DOG is the only thing that's been in true HD so far

More accurate to say the DOG was the only thing launched on monday :( Everything else seems the same! What's the point in RTE1 HD if they can't even simulcast Eastenders in HD? ??

Just like the introduction of colour from 1970 on (if you're old enough to remember!) the amount of HD programming transmitted will increase as time goes on. What will limit the amount is the lack of HD studio production available in RTÉ. Conversion of one of the main studios in the Television Centre would dramatically increase the amount of HD programming available.
Unlike there was with colour, there is no government limit on the number of hours being transmitted! :)

Not as yet, expected early in the New Year.

By right, Sky should not allow it on their EPG. HD channels need to have a minimum amount of HD programmes in order to be listed.

They've been bending / ignoring the rules for RTE Two "HD" though.

I think it's purely up to Sky though. But I 100% agree with the sentiment. Sky in reality pay for all Irish Carriage and provide the EPG + encryption free in lieu of paying the Irish channels for the rights. So Sky won't bother adding it till there is much HD content. They have to simulcast SD too.

I was wondering if anyone in the Cavan area is having problems with the RTE1 HD signal? I have no problems with any of the other Irish channels signal wise but RTE1 HD is dropping in signal strength from 100% down to 45 and sometimes 25% which is causing pixelation and break up so much so that I just watch RTE1 SD which has not break up at all....can anyone tell why this is happening? I have retuned several times but the problem is only on RTE1 HD on freq 44 I think? Thanks in advance for any help...

I'm just outside Derry and can pick up Moville Saorview transmitter.

Last week or so the general Saorview signal from Moville was all over the place, at times I have been even picking up what appear to be 'test cards' on both RTE1 and RTE2 HD.

Does anyone know if the whole country (Moville in my case) had RTE1 switched to RTE1 HD at the same time?

The signal up here has settled down thankfully but will the RTE1 HD graphic only be shown at top right of screen when the actual broadcast is in HD or should it be there all the time? I am asking as there is no HD icon on my RTE1 and the broadcast is obviously still SD which makes me wonder if Moville has been even switched over yet.

As with RTE Two, the HD logo is on screen all the time - which is wrong in my opinion

Does anyone know if the whole country (Moville in my case) had RTE1 switched to RTE1 HD at the same time?

The RTÉ1 (1440x1080i) HD stream was switched-on when Mux2 was launched on Nov 21st at all transmitters. No true HD programming has been broadcast that we know of since that date, only upscaled SD programming. The on-screen HD logo/DOG only appeared last Mon.
I am asking as there is no HD icon on my RTE1 and the broadcast is obviously still SD which makes me wonder if Moville has been even switched over yet.

There are 2 versions of RTÉ1 at the moment, the new HD stream on Mux2 and the old temporary SD simulcast version on Mux1 which will be switched off early in the New Year. The temporary SD version carries no name or programme information in the epg.

If you don't see HD logo you're seeing the "soon to be switched off" SD simulcast version.

When setting up your TV did you use Ireland or the UK as the country/region?

If you used UK then the Irish channels will be stored in the 800s and stored as found starting with the channels on the first mux found and moving to the second mux. In the case of Moville Mux2 should be found first on Ch.42 (channels RTÉ1 HD, RTÉ Junior and RTÉ1+1) moving to Mux1 on Ch.45 (RTÉ1 SD, RTÉ2 HD etc.)

At least (presuming RTE provide them with a decent quality feed) the RTE1 SD on Sky should look a lot better than the very low bitrate, reduced resolution, RTE1 SD on Saorview did. It was perhaps inferior to good analogue.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

RTE Terrestrial analogue reduced in quality when they went Widescreen on Digital platforms. Then reduced in quality again when they went to Digital on Terrestrial. The 544 SD is only adequate for 4:3 transmission, not for Widescreen.

Basically SD should never have had WS. Widescreen should only have been released with HD as square pixel SD would be 1024 x 576! Even the HD on Terrestrial is basically anamorphic as it's 1440 x 1080 rather than 1920 x 1080 square pixel.

However for typical vision, viewing distance and less than 46" TV probably 1440 x 1080 is good enough. The newer higher definition standard would need a 84" to 96" TV in a small room to be of value (or 160" in a pub). There would be more point for 99% of viewers to have progressive scan 2048 x 1152 and 48fps interpolated to 96fps on screen. That would be fine up to 60" screens and also for 3:1 cinema wide screen letter boxed (2048 x 682 in a 2048 x 1152 frame).

So SD & HD TV development has been a mess since 1990s. We now have about 12 HD formats on domestic digital! (24p, 25i, 30i, 30p, 50p, 60p frame rates and multiple resolutions from about 960 to 1920 wide and 720 or 1080 vertical) It's worse than Analogue era. I've lost count of SD resolutions and Transmission/Modulation standards and codecs.

It did me just fine in SD

There was no true WS transmission on Analogue (at least not often and never anamorphic). PalPlus was an interesting system to add resolution to non-anamorphic letterboxed WS).

ALL SD WS is ghastly soft compared to 4:3

Now all they need is better content, cap presenters salaries at so much per hour and ditch expensive egotistical overpaid "personalities".

Probably also get rid of most of the managers.

Raiders of the Lost Ark on RTE 1 at the moment. Doesn't look great at times. As it's 30+ years old now, maybe its the quality of the original that isn't the best.

aerial fell off the roof last week so got a new one installed. thought all the channels were back Irish and freeview but the RTE 1 HD and RTE +1 have a poor signal. Can watch it fine via the Humax on one of the 800 channels or directly on the TV ie not through the humax but only RTE 1 HD and RTE 1 +1 has the EPG guide. Can record directly by pressing the red button on the 800 channel but a bit annoying as can record other channels 50 + by EPG guide

I thought Raiders of the Lost Ark in hd looked worse than upscaled stuff on rte 2 and what really annoys me they had the wrong aspect ratio. I will be watching the temple of doom and the other movies on bbc three hd

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,711 ✭✭✭fat-tony

It's a pity that they stretch movies to fit the screen height - even the Simpsons 4:3 stuff suffers from "stretchyvision". I would agree that the Raiders of the Lost Ark wasn't a great quality transfer. I looked through the EPG for the week and set everything marked as HD to record just to check the quality. The Carols for Christmas was an excellent production.
