Women’s team showing some positive signs. Quite sloppy at times but the intent is very good. Will be interesting to see what they can do after developing this a bit further.

Two outrageously crooked line outs not called. Lucky

    And what a butchered chance!

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,018 ✭✭✭Bridge93

About 20 minutes of relentless pressure. Excellent defence mixed with loads of penalties and wasted chances. Much better than last week though

Theyve upped things from last week which is a good sign but still a lot to improve on.

    Still no yellow card, baffling

    21-8 win today.
    3rd behind England and France.

No Irish game next week but there's full round of AIL games. League has 3 rounds to play for and a lot to play for Bohs lead on 49 points, Railway next on 44, Belvedere 40, Cooke 33 then Blackrock 16, Galwegians 15, Highfield 14 and Tullamore on 13.

Best wishes to Alison miller for a speedy recovery. Compound fracture on her ankle.

I was at both the mens and womens matches over the weekend and, the atmosphere in donnybrook was better than the Lansdowne. I think the fact I was sat behind the Galwegians playes may have something to do with that though.
They should have won the game more comfortably, still not sold on Briggs at ten took the ball into contact far too often when there were overlaps outside her, actually the whole team were a bit blinkered in their carrying when a pass would have done a lot more damage. after watching the two games Cronin and Healy should be starting and benching SH's quicker/better passers and would take pressure of briggs in that sense as well. They made hard work of it lots of handling errors, but good win in the end.

Briggs dropped a lot of passes, as she said herself she was going for the record of most knock ons in a game!

What was concerning was the skill level, player opted to take the ball into contact as the Irish skill level isn't there with regards the passing, and the lack of ruthlessness and execution inside the Italian 22.

Scrum time, hats off to Mike Ross whose work with the scrum looked like it was paying off.

I'm worried about what is to come especially England, but great to get a win after a torrid few months

That wouldnt be difficult in terms of atmosphere...
I agree with you on them making hard work of it.

Anyway AIL is back this weekend. Games on Saturday and Sunday this week,

Saturday see's Old Belvedere v Railway Union while its Blackrock v Galwegians, Highfield v Tullamore and UL Bohs v Cooke on Sunday.

Malone have won the Ulster league and they enter the provincial round robin to see who will be promoted to the AIL for next season. Ballincollig should almost certainly win Munster title as theyre 9 from 9 at the moment.
Semi finals of Connacht league are this weekend. Title will be between NUIG and Castlebar. St Marys have already won the Leinster League but there's one round to go.

NZ has offered professional (ie paid) contracts to a squad of 30 female players.

I don't know if any other countries, including Ireland, have contracted female players? Maybe England?

England used to have contracted players. NZ's new approach is very similar to England's old approach. After the World Cup they ended the contracts and switched focus to 7s. Ireland have some contracted 7s players.

NZ paying €27.6k equivalent, that's a good bit more than Irish sevens are getting

In the airport now on the way over to the Ricoh to kick off the weekend.

Irishness rating: Primary School junior infants belting out an anthem

Was looking to travel up to this, but with it being on at 5.30pm I've no chance of getting there on time. Why move it up to Coventry and that early??

The RFU unlike IRFU move some international games out of the capital city.
And could be on that early to allow it to be shown on tv. Sky have it and then mens 20s on back to back

Makes no sense though to do so - vast majority of the England players are London area based, which if a game is to be televised, you would prefer people there rather than empty stadiums.

Even play it in the Majeski in Reading (home of London Irish), still near London but not in the capital

Yes it does. Just because some players are london based and moving games doesnt mean there will be empty stadiums.
Look at Mens under 20s here. Games were moved from Athlone to Donnybrook. Partly due to pitch conditions on some occasions and others because crowds would be bigger but that hasnt at all been the case.
Now the womens games have got better crowds than in Ashbourne.
It does make sense to move games

Nah. Why spend big money if they're bringing nothing in.

The dutch rugby union bankrupted themselves paying for a full time womens sevens team. Mental.

Because it’s a non-profit organisation whose entire purpose is to develop rugby in Ireland.

Non profit does not mean lose money. They have to balance the books.

IRFU would have to shut a lot of things/provinces/teams as they lose money regularly
Your comparison of dutch rugby is completely off. Funding a 7s side wont bankrupt IRFU.

They have to balance the books while developing rugby in Ireland.

Just as the NZRU have to balance the books while developing rugby in Ireland, without the same cash being generated by the 6 Nations or Champions Cup that funds Irish rugby (and allows our provinces to outbid theirs for players).

The NZRU obviously don't feel that women's rugby needs to be sacrificed to balance the books, but maybe the kiwis are just terrible at developing rugby!

    A waste of money.

They should stay amateur and if enough women start paying attention either in the stands or on tv then they can look for their share of the cash.

They aren’t getting anywhere near their share of the cash as it is. So frankly, you’re totally wrong.
