seems to be a mistake on the new tv ad

it goes..."it's now illegal for a non-registered electrician to carry out work in your home
    it's the LAW!"

if i'm not mistaken it's not illegal for a qualified electrician to respond to an emergency callout or carry out miscellaneous non-restricted works(of which there are many)

    should i tell them....

It's no mistake. Clearly they want people to get registered contractors for all work, since the whole idea is revenue based. So they put out ads with misleading wording.

In the IT industry we call this sales tactic "fear uncertainty and doubt" or FUD for short. :)

i'll fire off a complaint to advertising standards

    http://www.safeelectric.ie/

seems clearcut ...the ad makes no mention of the fact that the law only covers 'most' work

the safe electric form also appears to give the misleading impression that domestic work by a non-rec is illegal

as a former reci member for 15 yrs i can think of quite a few ways they can cleanup their own act first!

    In the interest of clarity:

On the 23rd July 2013 the Commission of Energy Regulation (CER) published the decision paper on the Scope of Restricted Electrical Works (CER/13/147). This means that only a Registered Electrical Contractor can complete electrical work in domestic premises, with the exception of "minor works". These regulations were enacted on 1st October 2013 through the Statutory Instrument Electricity Regulation Act 1999 (Restricted Electrical Works) Regulations 2013. Those found to ignore this may face prosecution.

As has been pointed out the TV add was incorrect/misleading as it suggested that all electrical work carried out in the home must be by a REC, whereas there are a several exceptions (minor works).

Minor works are defined on page 11 of this link:
