Christmas tree lights.

Before I go and buy new lights that end up blowing the fuse box on Christmas Eve, I thought it best to ask the experts, where is the best place to get good quality tree lights? Tesco? Woodies? Dunnes? Or elsewhere?

To be honest, any of those places are good! If there is a Home Store & More near you, one they have cleared out the Halloween stuff, they will have loads of Christmas lights. When I bought mine last year, they were half price too. I'd recommend going for all LED lights, much less power hungry, and you don't have the same problems with trying to find out which of those crappy little bulbs is the one that's blown, and thus keeping half of the lights off!

I'm sick of having lights fail on me every year so I've gone for LEDs this year. I'm not normally a fan (they always seem so bright) but they will be cheaper to run and hopefully will last a while without any issues.

If you get the ones that say "warm white" instead of the super bright ones, then they don't have that harsh white light.
The ones I have are the multi coloured ones though!

lidl and aldi sell 200 set nice warm white and multi coloured led tree lights for around 13 bob each season . they are good quality and come with the usual german 2 or 3 year garentee . tesco also sell led lights too and they are good too .
avoid woodies diy as they are way way overpriced and should be shot for selling at such a stupidly high inflated price .
homestore and more also sell led lights at half price , as the other poster has said . you can order and reserve them online with honestore .

How many lights should we buy for approx 6ft tree?
Also, any preferences for coloured or white lights?
Any advice on type or size or where to get it in South Dublin?

lidl and aldi wil be selling led tree lights in the next few weeks . they sell the tree lights from around the 1st week of november onwards.
300 lights on a 6 foot real tree is just nice and not too much.
warm white looks more natural and festive imo , multi coloured for the kids , if you have any in the house . i was told today by a friend who works in b n q that they will have real christmas trees on sale from friday 15th november .

I think although I can't remember that I have approx 400 leds on my tree (fake 7ft tree). They go up and down about half a dozen times!!! As to colour preference that really is a personal thing. I am all about colour at Christmas, almost to the point of gaudyness. But some folk like the crispness of white lights

theres ice white led lights and then theres warm white led tree lights.
then later is much nicer to look at on a tree and easier on the eye .

homestore and more will also be selling led tree lights from next month onwards too . they usually sell them off at half price and they sell out fast too .
dont buy from woodies diy they are absolute ripp offs on price .

When do Homestore bring in the half price offer on the warm white lights - they are the yellow colour lights right?

Am I the only one that can't be bothered with 'functions'? I don't like flashing, or twinkling or chasers. Far too distracting in the room.

Argos doing 3 for 2 on all lights and decs at the moment. 160 warm led lights for 12.99. Ended up getting 3 sets for 25.98 got a set a few months ago for a non christmas related household project and they've been going strong for months

Also the good thing about argos lights is they all come in individual clippy plastic boxes almost like lunchboxes, so each set can be stored individually after christmas, no tangles or unecessary wire damage

I am delighted with my solar powered lights for the garden .... working away for months now and even on a dull day they seem to work grand. (Homestore)

if you can all hold off for another 2-3 weeks then homestore and more will probably sell off all their festive lights at half price . they do this every late november and early december on the run up to christmas .

go to an electrical wholesalers or any good diy store and ask for some empty electrical cable reels or some empty alarm cable reels. they are made from cylindrical metal core and heavy duty cardboard . you will get them for free .these make for great christmas tree light rolls so that you can roll up the lights and then simply unroll them the next season .
thats what i do with all my outdoor led christmas lights and tree lights too . all of them are on old cable reels and then packed into a flatpack cardboard box from ikea . stored safely away in the attic .

Bit off topic but does anyone know if the homestore and more website tells you whether a light is run on batteries or plug?

I can't find the info anywhere on the page. I'm guessing by the prices they are battery run!

speaking of mistakes , i just bought set of 300 multi coloured led tree lights in tesco clearwater on this morning.
shelf price said 43 euro 50 cents but they scanned through at 19 euro 99 cents . went back and bought a set of 300 warm white lights at that price too . happy days .

The "Warm white" lights, while not being "yellow" they do have that warmer yellowish colour to them, and not the glaring super-white light of the plain white LEDs.

I'm not 100%, but that looks like a battery run set alright. I have a halloween spider-web a bit similar to that, and it was battery run.

the lidl lights would be more of a warm white when compared to homestore and more led tree lights . have a set of both here and there is more of a warm white glow from lidls lights .

lidl don't have the lights out on display. but if you take a pack to the checkout and ask to see them working for a few seconds they they will do that for you , they come with a 3 year garentee aswell .
