I'm looking to set up a small part time business.
I have a business name that I would like to register so no one else can use it/say that I copied them!

But after a while googling, I don;t know exactly what I'm meant to do!?

Do I need to patent it.. use something like this - http://www.registerabusinessname.ie/search-results.cfm?s=1&tc=1&ac=nizhoni

It's a work in progress so I won't be trading for a good few months but I would like to register the name now?!

You can register your business name with the company registration office, i think it costs €20.
You can also seach your company name to make sure it has not been registered before.

You need to go to the Companies registration Office website and follow the instructions there for registering a business name.

    http://www.cro.ie/ena/business-registration-business-name.aspx

It's fairly straight forward and you pay the fee on line. You then have to print off a document and sign it and post it to them and you get the Certificate not long afterwards

Thanks a mill for your help.
Does it matter if I won't be trading for a while?

You should note that registration of a business name:

does not give protection against duplication of the name

Just spent 20 mins filling out a form but I'm not sure if I need to do everything..

All I want to do is register the name! I'm not being lazy but is there an easier way to do this?!

If you're trying to register the business name, following the instructions on the CRO website is the most cost effective way of doing it. You could always pay one of the company formations agents to do it for you but you'd have to give them the same information anyway.

If you're trying to protect the name so that others cannot use it, a RBN isn't going to give you much (anything).

What are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to register the name so that you can trade using that name or are you trying to protect the name for a future product/service? (or something completely different that I've missed entirely)

Please note that registering a business name does not protect it from use by other people.. that only comes when you register as a limited company...
