Love the fact you're begging everyone to ask you about crisps:D

If you could do any open-water swim anywhere on earth, what would it be?

Next to "what's your star sign" (scorpio) I feel like you don't REALLY know someone until your familiar with their snack preferences.

    *Open water swim
Escape from Alcatraz, the Lough Ness Monster swim or jumping from the ferry at the start of the Norseman

    What are your favourite nuts?

I like those chilli nuts and KP do cracking salt and vinegar peanut...not technically nuts but y'know...

Any nuts. Salted, raw, honey roasted....as long as they're the edible kind.

you are most likely being the most knowlegalbe person on this forum when it comes to health. whats your point on health in triathlon ,should we focuse more on the positive effects triathlon has ( less obisity, higher stamina, reduction of stress etc )
or should more worry about the health risks ?
do you think given that there is a lower statistical heart failure rate in triathlon than in real life this is something triathlon needs to focus more about ( given that the scientific evidnece so far suggests that this seems not to have any bearing -in fact it would prevent many more people from doing sport - than those it could help) or should those resources go to promote the positive effects on the sport?

Since its not a black and white answer maybe a better way to ask proportion of resouces should go in promoting health aspects and what proportion in preventing health issues in sport?

    Hi LittleMs :)

What is your race morning routine like?
What is your 100m FS PB?
    What is your 5k PB?
What is your fav cycle route?
What is you fav run route?
What type of sessions do you prefer, long and easy or hard and fast stuff?
Select 5 people (dead r alive) that you would like to have a "Come Dine With Me" experience with. (remember a week is a long time!)

tbh I don't feel I'm particularly well informed on this subject. Sports medicine is a very specialised area which I would have a lot of interest in as a potential future career. The emphasis in undergraduate teaching however is on preparing us to deal with the kind of ill patients one might encounter on a typical day in a GP's office or public hospital. Collapsing from de/over hydration during an endurance event is something that happens to fit and otherwise healthy individuals. So I can give my opinion, but I don't think it's worth more than anyone else's.

In general prevention is always better than cure so I don't think the answer is just to set up more medical tents. I would say that athletes need to be better informed about the risks involved. Many (myself included) probably don't take nutrition seriously enough and even when it is discussed people tend to focus more on meeting energy requirements than hydration. We don't want to be scaring people away from the sport by suggesting that triathlon can damage your health especially as it's really the longer distance races which this issue applies to and for most their first event will not be an Ironman. So, I think emphasise the positive effects for the general population and within the sport focus on educating athletes about the potential risks and importance of proper nutrition and hydration.

    *Favourite book
Don't really have one. In terms of fiction, I like books of short stories and I really enjoyed "We Need to Talk about Kevin". At the moment though I'd be more into non-fiction - sports biographies and popular science.

    *Current book
Lately I tend to dip in and out of books so I have several that I have started and no finished:
    The Psychopath Test
    The Brownlees' biography
    Bradley Wiggins: My Time
    Bad Pharma
One of the Ross O'Carroll Kelly books

    *Worst book
The Death of Marco Pantani...just found it boring.

    *Superpower
Ability to fly: never again would I have to rely on public transport and I could spy on open air gigs and matches for free:)

    *Turbo
Like is a strong word. It serves a purpose - it's good for specific sessions e.g. 3 x 20 mins threshold, but I love getting out for a long spin at the weekend.

    *Cooking
Eh, kind of - I am living at home so my Mam does most of the cooking:o. When I had an apartment on campus last year I would mostly make salads and pasta/noodle dishes (or avail of free meals as part of my scholarship...). So current masterchef dish would probably be "haricots sur toast"

    Hi LittleMs :)

Select 5 people (dead r alive) that you would like to have a "Come Dine With Me" experience with. (remember a week is a long time!)

    *Race morning routine
Probably a little ad hoc for a triathlete:
Night before - pack bag, look over race maps and briefing (ok I've done this AT LEAST once...), register if possible and leave out gear for the morning
Morning - shower, breakfast, fill bottles, get to venue early enough so as not to be late but not too early that I have to hang around for ages (same with exams - I get nervous enough by myself without absorbing others' tension also). I don't tend to spend time on race morning checking my bike - I take it out for a short spin the day before. Before I rack it I'll pump the tyres and clip my shoes in but that's about it. Set up my transition spot as quickly as possible, suss out entry and exit routes. Warm-up...depends on whether I feel like it.
It's funny because I tend to me quite an obsessive when it comes to organisation but with race prep I'm quite lax. I'm more concerned with trying to stay calm and having anal routines just winds me up.

    *100m fs pb
1:06 back in the days when I was swimming more. Backcrawl was my no.1 stroke though

    *5k pb
18:32 in the only 5km road race I ever did

    *fav cycle route
I did the Mick Byrne audax last year - I think it was 160km round Wicklow, leaving from Dalkey. It was a lovely route and a beautiful sunny day. Any cycle with plenty of climbs suits me.

    *fav run route
Anything offroad. I like running down by the canal near where I live. I find trail running more fun and the time goes by much quicker.

    *fav sessions
I like the variety. I like the sense of efficiency I get from getting up and doing a short hard swim/turbo session first thing in the morning and having my hard work done for the day. On a Sunday though, I enjoy a nice long spin at a steady pace with a bit of chat with my clubmates and a bit of messing in the last few km before the tea stop.

    *Come dine with me experience
Graham Norton - for the craic
Sean Kelly - for his wonderful conversational skills
David Sedaris - went to one of his book signings and he was really entertaining
Usain Bolt - if chicken nuggets are his favourite food that would be an easy 10/10 right there
My Mam - it would be rude not to

    *Best ever gig
Foo fighters in the (then) Point. I'm a huge fan and they played all my favourites.

*Who would you most like to see
I'm not really as big into music these days, I tend to listen to the radio more often. When I do go to gigs it's more comedy acts I go to see - would love to see Giftgrub live

    *Matches
    Rugby internationals

    *uphill or downhill
    Already answered - uphill

    *Chased or chasing
Chasing - having a target to track down pushes me harder

    *Glass half full or empty
My tendency is to be a negative thinker but I try to force myself to be more positive

    *Lochte or Phelps
Phelps...I was really rooting for him to go out on a high in London
