Issue with wireless connection!! PLEASE HELP!

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone had any ideas what might be wrong with my laptop before i bring it to get fixed as i really don't want to get taken to the cleaners on this (i'm only a poor student ).

my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite pro L-850, running windows 7

The issue basically is for some reason when i connect to any wireless now im barely receiving any signal strength! I have Horizon 200 mb broadband at home but when i connect via wireless all im getting on my laptop is about 10mb while everyone else in the house is getting over 100mb all the time! I have tried plugging in the cable directly and straight away i get up to 170 mb download speed!

The same happens in work, everyone on the network is getting over 20mb all the time while i'm struggling to get over 1mb

I don't know whats wrong, this only started about a month ago and i thought it might correct itself but no luck yet!

I also had to have a new screen fitted as the last one broke, I'm not sure if this is relevant but just thought i'd mention it!

Any help anyone can give me would be great cheers!

Download mint 7 iso,burn to cdr ,burn image using iMburn free program.
boot from cdr ,Mint will load up.
see if wifi works at faster speed.

if it works ok, that means theres a software problem with windows,
wifi unit is ok.

10 meg per sec speed is fine,
i dont know of any broadband service faster than 25meg,

I think you are confused ,
your ethernet port can run at 10meg per second or 100meg ,10/100 ethernet
but 10 meg per second speed is fine for anyone on a wifi card.

newer laptops have have faster ethernet ports.
1000meg per sec.
thats the potential speed between the router and the ethernet port
when using a cable ,
not wifi speed.

10MEG PER sec is fine,
say for youtube even 2meg per sec is enough.

the fastest connection i got is 20 meg per second , using speedtest.net ,
10ft from the router.

when i ran a speed test with Ookla speed test with the cable plugged in i got upto 170mbps

without im getting less then 10mbps this is fact? and Everyone else in the house gets minimum of 50mbps using the wifi!

I'll try the mint iso but it says its for linux???

I just checked , eircom, vodaphone,

do broadband UP TO 70meg.
theres no broadband service in ireland giving 150meg speed.
MOST lan ethernet adaptors run at 10meg to 100meg per second.

the fastest download i ever got was 1.5meg per sec ,
when i was downloading a file.
if you get 10 meg on wifi you are doing fine.

mint is a linux os,operating system,

you burn iso ,burn image .iso to cdr,
then boot from cd ,
set bios boot to cd.
cd dvd, =device 0,

first boot =cd/dvd

burn cd,
reboot laptop,
it takes 3 to 5mins to load os into memory,
you are now running mint linux,os.
click on menu ,firefox ,
browser,

see if the web speed is faster,

you may need to click on wifi icon,
on the right ,side,
put in wifi password.


it runs from cdr ,

does not touch windows os,

if you want to click install to disk,

it,ll make a 5gig partition ,

and install on drive c.

and make a boot up menu ,

boot win7,

or boot mint linux 7 ,


just run it from cdr for the moment.

its not a program its a full os,
690meg on 1 cdr disk.

get frree iMgburn program to burn the img file.

in practice,

very few websites need more than 3meg per sec speed,

wifi speed varys with distance to router,
if i go 20ft from router, i get close to zero meg per second.

i,m getting around 11 meg per second.
12 ft from router.

i got 21 meg on upc,

when i tested ,
7ft from the router ,in a friends gaff.

runs from cdr, boots from cdr ,windows doesnt load .
it loads linux from disc.

unless you think its faster than windows,
run it from cdr disk.

maybe other people are closer to router ,

say you are 15ft from it ,you,ll get less than 10 meg per second.

thick brick walls also block ,reduce the wifi speed .

say you are in a room ,upstairs , router is downstairs ,
9meg per sec is a GOOD signal,

they usually put UPC router within 20 feet of the upc cable, fibre entry point ,
eg in the hallway,or sitting room .

I just posted you the link to UPCs horizon package? Anyway i'm not having this argument with you this is not a debate about my broadband speed, i'm not lying for the sake of it, if everyone else in my house was getting the same speed as me i wouldn't be complaining as i wouldn't have noticed but 40mbs or so is a sizeable difference?

Than try booting up,from a mint 7 cdr,

if the speed is faster, than its a windows ,software issue .
maybe you need a new wifi driver.
what model laptop have you got,is it win7,
windows 8.

eg sony 560kt windows 8

or maybe buy a usb wifi unit,cost 30 euro ,

win8 has issues with wifi.

disable onboard wifi,
use usb wifi unit.
if you buy one.

ok,looks like your wifi is running slower than normal.

i believe you .
wifi signal speed varys with distance to router .


if it runs faster on linux mint 7,

then you know its not a laptop hardware problem,

its a windows ,software problem.

windows 8 wifi has KNOWN problems,

IF you have permission ,you could run an ethernet cable from the router to your room,

that wont fix problem at work re slow wifi.

Yes it was perfect, the same as everyone else in the house, but it was fine up until a week or so after i got the screen replaced? And im also running windows 7

I posted as much of this info in my original post as i could i dont know about card parts etc tho

Edit: Wireless card = Atheros AR946x Wireless Network Adapter (I think this is what you mean?)

REMOVE power cable, knock off laptop,
open up, wifi case cover,
underneath laptop.
wifi cover 3inchx2 inch approx.
MAKE SURE the 2 wifi aerial cables are on tight on the 2 wifi chip, connectors.

There,s 2 cable s that usually are connected onto 2 connectors on to the top of the chip.

sounds like you need to open the top bezel, make sure the wifi wires are in the right place, and connected properly.
they maybe loose .

Looks like the issue is with the wifi aerial wires ,
underneath, or near the bezel,
which maybe were moved when the screen was replaced.
