Hello, I have weeds growing between kerbs and tarmac and in a couple of cracks in a concrete yard. Is spraying a couple of times a year my only option or can they be got rid of for good?

    thanks

Weed seeds will land by wind dispersal etc every year so a clean drive one year will soon again be filled by natures wonderous weeds again.

I spray every year twice even though I don't like using sprays for environmental reasons but have tried strimming but it doesn't kill back to the roots. I also bought one of those flame weevers in aldi but didn't like it as found it ok on a small area but not so on a very large area..

    Just my opinion

Ps Roundup won't fully kill docks, thistles and nettles so an even more powerful chemical such as grazon is need on to of a dose of round up in between...

+1 on the above , you could also seal the cracks/joints in the concrete.

Lots of option, spraying is one of the easiest and most effective. But if you have concerns about using herbicides, why not try making your own organic spray. Very easy, mixing vinegar with water, Google for recipes.

BTW, I have yet to encounter any weed in a garden/driveway area which is immune to Glysophate spraying.

Hi there. From my experience in driveways (20 years) you can't spray weed killer in Tarmac without it leaving a white stain on it. What I use is caseron g. It's a granular weedkiller that doesn't take mixing. Just shake on the weeds. It's the best for driveways you can get. Fact.

One of the best things for killing weeds is to put salt on them, then pour boiling water on it. It kills the weeds back to the roots and they will be dead with in one day

True if you have docks or thistles on your lawn or concrete salt works a treat. But don't put boiling water on your Tarmac. Salt is ok. Boiling water can ravel the tar.

There are specific weed killers for paths / drives / patio / Anywhere that you don't want to grow plants / vegetables / etc

One such brand is Path Clear and these weedkillers act differently to roundup in that the don't just kill the weeds that are currently growing. Path Clear will sit in the soil for up to 6 months and Prevent the emergence of New weeds
Look for the active ingredients: Metosulam & Flufenacet or oxadiazon and diflufenican

These are residual weed killers and can not be used on areas where you want to grow plants

Casoron G was very effective, but has been withdrawn from market (banned) at least 3 years or more now?

Bayer offer something similar to Casoron G.

Or buy a weed knife and fill the cracks with sharp sand.

I plan on using salt and vinegar mixed in water with a dab of washing up liquid. The soap will help it stick to the plant and the soil. The build up of salt & vinegar in the soil will prevent future weeds growing.
Worth trying before using commercial weedkiller

I just pull them out, it's the easiest way of dealing with them. I would never use salt, I wouldn't want a build up of salt in my soil.
