Depends where the meter is, if its a ESB meter they will change the current one for a meter with a keypad but will install a handheld device indoors, for the like of prepaypower and the other group they install their own meter beside the ESB one but again will have one inside.

I am helping a neighbour. The main meters are ESB - the customer is with Bord Gais. They are in a standard wall box near the back door.

He is not keen on having the interior kitchen wall messed up with a meter plus wiring.

Does the remote show usage etc?

    Whos the supplier?

Sorry missed that in the post above, yeh they will be ESB meters, the handheld should be just inside the door and will have the same options as the actual meter so he can check credit/usage etc.

Bord gais are saying that he must pay 200 to have the existing, combination night storage meter, replaced with a 24 hour meter.

They will then call & replace the 24 hour meter with a prepayment meter fo free.

If the prepay meters are installed by ESB then surely they can do it in one visit?

Pre pay meters are 24 hour meters only as they are one rate the whole day where a night meter will charge near enough half price after a certain time. The 200 charge is what ESB networks charge for a change to a 24 hour but funnily enough its free to go to a day and night meter.
