The Clayton Hotel is my non-city Local. Expensive though...€4.50 for a Smithwicks although a glass of wine is a reasonable enough €5.50.

€5.50 is steep enough for a wine no? Unless it's a decent one.
Although it's worth nearly worth paying in excessfor anything semi-ok that is not a 'little bottle' :)

Its good stuff out of a bottle into a glass and depending who's pouring, you get a decent enough measure. Is it not around €5 for the little bottles in most places anyways?

Yeah it often can be a fiver (or more!) for those little bottles. Some are slightly better than others but they are headache makers of the highest order!

I believe Neachtains still do a huge glass of great wine for a fiver. A lot of places do wine for a fiver or less, but in one of the little or medium glasses.

Very rare to get wine for a fiver in a pub now. Neactains are six since the budget. McSwiggins and The Dail used to do a special but don't know what they have increased to.

Ah no, six? Still - those glasses are huge!
I think The Townhouse does reasonably priced wine still, and it's always nice.
McSwiggans used to be something like 3.50 for a wine, but it was a tiny glass.

Would the tribune be better off conducting a survey into why they are giving out their paper free door to door in Knocknacarra and not in Westside or Mervue. Snobbery or do they just not see any potential buyers there. My cousin has got it every week since it started in Cartur Mor.

Eh? Why would they conduct a survey into their own decision? What does that have to do with the price of a pint?

Yeah. Stick to the topic please!

The pint of guinness has gone up over 30 cent in a lot of places in the last year.

Hilariously enough, that's nearly double what it actually costs Guinness to make 1L of the stuff.

Now how expensive is your pint?

It's well established that the cut is roughly 1/3 brewery, 1/3 tax, 1/3 pub.

Had to laugh at the bottom of the receipt - "No Cover Charge".

The missus' work party for Christmas was going to be in the Clayton. About 35 of them from her department. They've decided to look elsewhere after seeing the price survey. I really can't blame them to be honest, I'd rather Freeney's by the fire than overpriced bullsh|t, even if it is a dressing-up affair

I'm loving the naming and shaming (surprised Boards are allowing it). That Temple Bar receipt went viral on Facebook too. It's about time punters rounded on greedy publicans and stopped letting them get away with blaming prices on budgets and brewers. Some of the very expensive places are not even in prime locations or large premises so it's not rent either.

its 1/3 to the government 1/3 to the brewery 1/3 to the pub.

The pub has to pay wages rent rates water heat etc. Its not the boom time anymore alot of pubs are only tipping along.

Looked for a copy at the weekend and couldn't find one but delighted to see this sort of thing. Whatever about the price of pints, the price of soft drinks in most bars is little short of scandalous.

How come Pub A can afford to charge €3 for a pint while a much bigger, busier Pub B is charging over €4? If they're making the same profits then they need to take a serious look at how their business is being run.

Do you really think they're all paying the same rent, and the same hourly rate to their staff?

Have you really not noticed that the standard of fittings and maintenance in the flash pubs in town is a lot higher than in the scruffier / cheaper ones.

And that some make their profits from food, and use drink as more of a loss leader to get people into the place?

Ecnonimics is all about supply and demand. Many people will gladly pay more for the right to be seen in a trendy place - or to go to a place that youngsters cannot afford to go to.

You can buy an electronic copy online. The offices might have old copies available as well.
