The internet really does invite the strongest language for the most trivial things.

One thing I don't like about this thread is that it's made me think about getting a Wii U more than a few times now, despite knowing that I barely have time for PS3, PS4, Vita and 360 ;) Well... the 360 is practically finished for me, so I guess there might be room.

Ok, but I'm not the one saying PC is the only way to play games and ruling out console gaming altogether. Both have their merits.

Funny, you didn't seem to say both had there merits a minute ago. Seemed to me like you were saying plenty of people can live without PC gaming. Hence my post. I suppose I was wrong then...

I want to pick up a Wii U as well, but I would just have no time to play it as it stands, I have enough of a backlog with the 3DS, Vita and PS3/4 ( although I have finished everything I wanted to play on the PS4 ) not to mention the amount of games on Steam that I have not touched yet.

There's something about the console wars which can turn the most sensible of people into a moronic whingebag

If you're saying that the Stanley parable isn't good, there's three options for me

    1) Console troll (which I don't think you are, considering your arguments for papers please)
    B) Haven't played it.
    3) Don't understand it.

I'd guess you haven't played it to be honest, I can understand people not bothered with starcraft/civ/aoe, they are greag games but RTS isnt everyones thing, but The Stanley Parable is an absolutely fantastic game IMO.

I'm not a big strategy guy, but have had games in the genre that I've spent a considerable amount of time on. Civ 5 is great, especially with expansions. It's a lot more accessible than other strategy games. Take Europa Universalis IV... Uh, yeah, if the tutorial doesn't turn you off the game then its either because strategy is really your thing or you have a lot of time in which to grasp everything. I guess the former doesn't apply to me as much as I'd like and the latter I know doesn't. But yeah, Civ 5 is hardly that demanding. Certainly not from a graphics perspective. Got it running fine on my old PC. Tried the demo to see it worked and it just clicked somewhere before I'd gone through the demo the first time. So much so that I fired that demo back up again to do it again.

Might as well add this new Amazon console that is rumoured. Steam box won't take off as there are about 14 different ones.
Running the Android operating system, the system will compete directly with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, offering the streaming and download of games, music, movies and TV content, multiple sources have told VG247.

Senior publishing sources have been meeting with Amazon for a briefing on the hardware – which currently goes by a number of different codenames – and popular Android and iOS games have been used to demo the device.

The unit being shown to publishers at this point is said to be roughly the same size as the PSone redesign, grey in colour, oblong in shape and with sharp edges. However, the pre-production unit is likely to have a full makeover before any official release.

The hardware is being created in conjunction with subsidiary Lab 126, designers of Amazon’s Kindle devices.

Amazon will target an affordable price point – we’re told below $300 in the US – in a pricing move similar to Amazon’s marketing of the Kindle Fire HD against high-end iPad hardware from Apple.

They have also bought Killer Instinct developer Helix games.

Just because the link says its competing with Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo doesn't mean they are. It sounds like it'll be more competing with Ouya, for example. I'd be very surprised by people abstaining from the big 3 for this amazon console, and certainly don't see it happening en masse.

Ouya is only $70, with that price point of under $300 I'm guessing they are trying to enter the console market, maybe taking on Nintendo.

Eurogamer say to stick with the PS3 for now if you want a console with good media playback.

Article: PS4 vs Xbox One: which is the better media player?

Yes, I read that article before and to be honest, althoughi think the Xbox comes out of it terrible (media center my ass!), the PS4 doesn't fair too well either. I gave up on the consoles as media players ages ago and bought a Dune. There's just no comparison. If you want a media player, buy one. Forget these half-assed console attempts.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,347 ✭✭✭✭Grayditch

I'm the same that way, I know this gens consoles should be monster media players too, but I like having things seperate, or maybe I'm just used to doing things that way.

android consoles will never, ever compete

steam machines aren't a platform as such. theyre just custom pcs running steam for the living room - but give them time and they could potentially mean the end of traditional consoles. doesn't matter that there's loads of variants, they all do the same thing to different extents

I don't think the steam machine will end consoles unless Valve were to force developers to have their games run on the lowest spec steam machine. That is afterall, the attraction for some people with consoles. They know that when they buy the game it is going to work without any optimisation needed. For me I would be just as happy that they worked on Big picture mode as I don't feel the need for a whole new OS.

    www.gamingbolt.com/xbox-ones-esram-too-small-to-output-games-at-1080p-but-will-catch-up-to-ps4-rebellion-games
Rebellion Games’ Jean-Baptiste Bolcato, who is working as a Senior Producer on the upcoming Sniper Elite 3... asked how the team was handling eSRAM. Some developers use it for texture streaming, storing z-buffer and praise its ease of use while others have problems – how is Rebellion handling that?

Bolcato stated that, “It was clearly a bit more complicated to extract the maximum power from the Xbox One when you’re trying to do that. I think eSRAM is easy to use. The only problem is…Part of the problem is that it’s just a little bit too small to output 1080p within that size. It’s such a small size within there that we can’t do everything in 1080p with that little buffer of super-fast RAM.

“It means you have to do it in chunks or using tricks, tiling it and so on. It’s a bit like the reverse of the PS3. PS3 was harder to program for than the Xbox 360. Now it seems like everything has reversed but it doesn’t mean it’s far less powerful – it’s just a pain in the ass to start with. We are on fine ground now but the first few months were hell.”

Will the process become easier over time as understanding of the hardware improves? “Definitely, yeah. They are releasing a new SDK that’s much faster and we will be comfortably running at 1080p on Xbox One. We were worried six months ago and we are not anymore, it’s got better and they are quite comparable machines. The Xbox One is a bit more multimedia, a bit more hub-centric so its a bit more complex. There’s stuff you can and can’t do because it’s a sort of multimedia hub. PS4 doesn’t have that. PS4 is just a games machine.”

The PS4 is thus more of a gaming machine in its core focus. “Yeah, I mean that’s probably why, well at least on paper, it’s a bit more powerful. But I think the Xbox One is gonna catch up. But definitely there’s this eSRAM. PS4 has 8GB and it’s almost as fast as eSRAM [bandwidth wise] but at the same time you can go a little bit further with it, because you don’t have this slower memory. That’s also why you don’t have that many games running in 1080p, because you have to make it smaller, for what you can fit into the eSRAM with the Xbox One.”
